Very excited and proud to share this latest work of our heavy industry team at Global Energy Monitor! Our Global Blast Furnace Tracker (GBFT) is a free, publicly-available dataset covering over 90% of global pig iron production capacity.
Global Energy Monitor@GlobalEnergyMon

🚨 NEW TRACKER 🚨 Check out our new 🌐 Global #BlastFurnace Tracker cataloging: 🔥 1408 blast furnaces across 477 plants in 55 countries 🌏 🏗️ A total of 2.0B tonnes pig iron capacity, representing 91% of the global capacity View & download the data: globalenergymonitor.org/projects/globa…

"Relining is a costly investment decision that can extend the life cycle of coal-based steelmaking by decades, locking in significant emissions potential and diverting much-needed capital from lower-emissions technology like direct reduced iron plants and electric arc furnaces"
Global Energy Monitor@GlobalEnergyMon

📢 New GEM research reveals that over half of Russia's 🇷🇺 coal-based blast furnace capacity is set for relining in the next decade. Can the country seize the opportunity to pivot towards greener technologies? Find out more in our latest briefing: bit.ly/3HW608x

As steel's climate impact is examined, can the industry embrace greener practices? GEM's @caitlinswalec believes it can: "The steel industry has been through these big changes before, it's totally possible to go through them again." Watch the full video: ft.com/video/d70764be…

Though we've seen movement in green iron/steel announcements over the past few years, top steel producers still need to commit to clear and transparent net zero goals.
Global Energy Monitor@GlobalEnergyMon

📢 Just in: A new GEM report reveals alarming stats on the #steel industry's sustainability challenges. Coal-based steelmaking outpaces green efforts, and only a third of the top 50 producers aim for net zero emissions by 2050. 🌍🏭 Learn more: bit.ly/3MgwDr4

@jonls_1 @CleanPowerDave @GlobalEnergyMon DRI uses CO and hydrogen as reducing agents, most commonly coming from syngas, coal, or reformed natural gas. However, using green hydrogen (produced through a renewables-powered electrolyzer) allows the DRI production to be near zero emissions.

@jonls_1 @CleanPowerDave @GlobalEnergyMon Some EAFs can be used just for recycling (all scrap fed, we call it secondary steelmaking). When an EAF is used for primary steelmaking as Dave was describing, the unit is typically charged with a small amount of scrap, possibly some pig iron, and then direct reduced iron (DRI).

@CleanPowerDave @Sustainable2050 @GlobalEnergyMon The total amount of steelmaking capacity under development has risen since 2022, but the proportion of steel capacity using under development and brought online in the last two years is shifting towards more EAF and less coal-based BF-BOF.

This growth comes at a critical time as the steel industry faces a significant US$554 billion in stranded asset risk. 💰 @caitlinswalec, Program Director for Heavy Industry at GEM says, “Steel producers and consumers need to raise ambition for decarbonization plans."

🔥 New investments in coal-based steelmaking are a clear & present danger to the planet. 71% of global coal-based blast furnaces facing reinvestment by 2030. Let's avoid locking in high-emission technologies for another 20 years. #Steel #GreenSteel #Coal #Climate

Had a *blast* representing @GlobalEnergyMon on the green steel transition panel at @ieefa_institute along with Anna Song of @forourclimate and @LeanneGovinds of @CentreEnvRights!
IEEFA.org@ieefa_institute

“The transition away from coal-based steel production is underway, but it's moving far too slowly,” says @caitlinswalec. “To meet climate goals, we need to stop building and reinvesting in blast furnaces and focus our efforts on low-emissions steelmaking.” #energyfinance2023
