As a medical school professor, I used to tell students that attention lapses were just "brain fog." MIT's new Nature Neuroscience study reveals something far more profound. When you skip sleep, your brain forces emergency "wash cycles" during waking hours -- flooding cerebrospinal fluid through your skull to clear metabolic waste. The cost? Every wash cycle shuts down your attention for seconds at a time. Key findings from 26 adults studied with fMRI, EEG, and pupillometry: -- Sleep-deprived brains produced CSF waves identical to deep sleep -- 2 seconds before each attention lapse, fluid surged outward -- Brain activity dropped to sleep-like levels during waking hours Your brain will clean itself one way or another. Either you sleep, or it hijacks your waking hours to do it. Full breakdown coming on the Health Longevity Secrets podcast. #SleepScience #BrainHealth #Neuroscience #SleepDeprivation #Longevity Source: nature.com/articles/s4159…

Braelyn update Tuesday March 31st🤍 Today was Braelyn’s last day of home care. Tomorrow, we head for her proton radiation evaluation and additional imaging. Even after 2 years and 8 months, the days leading up to scans still bring a lot of anxiety. That part hasn’t gotten easier. But I find comfort in knowing the surgery was meticulous — Dr. Liau removed as much tumor as possible and cauterized the vessels feeding what remained. And we now have a clear plan forward: proton radiation, followed by DCVax. In the meantime, Braelyn keeps showing up and doing the work. She’s now walking independently and even going up stairs step-over-step without using the railing — something that felt impossible not long ago. Today we’re holding both things at once: the fear… and the progress One step at a time

Très longue enquête de Pro Publica qui rappelle et raconte, notamment, "comment les maladies évitables par la vaccination peuvent ressurgir de façon fulgurante lorsque la confiance dans les vaccins ou l’accès à ceux-ci s’érode". A bon entendeur... propublica.org/article/rfk-jr…

Braelyn update Saturday, March 28th This is why we chose proton radiation for Braelyn. Photon radiation passes all the way through the brain — delivering dose before and after the tumor. Proton radiation can be targeted to stop at the tumor (Bragg peak), reducing exposure to surrounding healthy brain tissue. As we move into this next phase, I feel some relief knowing she will be receiving proton rather than photon radiation. This was not an easy decision for me. I have had significant concerns about radiation — especially to the brain — and still do. But this more targeted approach helps us balance two critical goals: • controlling tumor growth • preserving brain function and immune integrity That second part matters deeply right now. We are actively pursuing a dendritic cell vaccine, which depends on the body’s immune system to generate an effective response. We are trying to buy time — while also protecting the very system we hope will help her fight long-term. @andrewcaravello @NorthwestBio

Imagine if germline gene correction could become as routine--and affordable--as IVF. I talked to @CathyTie (Locke Bio, Manhattan Project) on Bio/Acc. How do we build in regulated biotech? Can D2C healthcare cut costs? And how do we do germline editing the right way? 🧵
