@jamesnorth7 @BogataTimar a) yes this is true b) not a super unusual name, no - also fairly common ‚ethnonymic’ names in Central Europe: Deutsch (German), Horvath (Croat), Lengyel or Polak (Pole), Böhm (Bohemian->Czech), Olah (Wallachian->Romanian), etc.

@BogataTimar Thanks. A question: is his last name also the name of the national language? Is that unusual?

okay I guess I have to talk about Péter Magyar here. Let me just start with saying, in a very unladylike way, that you guys seem to have zero clue what happened in Hungary in the last two years, you completely miss the point, and you're a disappointing bunch. Let's go.

💍 Every fourth Russian woman is ready to marry an unloved man for the sake of an expensive ring, according to a survey. 84% of women believe that the jewelry should cost no less than 100 thousand rubles, and every second woman dreams of a ring worth more than a million. Only 12% of women consider affordable options. At the same time, only 23% of men have a budget sufficient for the desired ring. Most (65%) have to take loans or ask for money from parents or friends to buy a ring

In general, what is wrong with the Irish people specifically? I’ve seen so many of them tell me that I should just put up with my own government persecuting me for my work, because it’s “anti-imperialist” and I’m some kind of “Zionist NATO shill.” But apparently it’s not just about Russia (I’m Russian, and I oppose my country’s invasion of Ukraine) since it’s most of the time it’s Irish online activists telling actual people from Syria, Iran etc to just shut up and suffer the persecution from their own governments because America bad or something. What is so spectacularly wrong with the Irish that made them like this? It’s clearly not their own nation’s history of persecution, since they haven’t leaned any lessons from it.

Jan 2, 2026 The Crans-Montana tragedy, which struck on New Year’s Eve 2025/2026 at the Le Constellation nightclub/bar in Switzerland, continues to shock the world. A newly released videos from inside the venue shows a horrifying and unbelievable scene: as fire rapidly spreads across the ceiling, likely sparked by sparkling fountains (pyrotechnic sparklers) attached to champagne bottles held too close to flammable materials like acoustic foam, hundreds of young people keep dancing, singing, filming with their phones, and celebrating as if nothing is wrong. No alarm sounds, no organized evacuation, the music stays at full volume for long minutes, and flames engulf everything in seconds. Around the growing fire, you can clearly see partygoers, mostly teens and young adults, completely unaware of the deadly danger: they form conga lines, jump around, laugh, take selfies or videos while burning debris falls from the ceiling and toxic smoke fills the packed basement room. No fire extinguishers are used, no immediate reaction from staff or guests to alert others or evacuate. This collective stupidity and denial, fueled by alcohol, excitement, and group mentality, turned a festive night into one of Switzerland’s worst recent disasters: around 40 dead (many young), over 115 seriously injured (severe burns, smoke inhalation), and five days of national mourning. The chilling footage recalls other tragedies (like the Station fire in the US or Colectiv in Romania) where indoor pyrotechnics and non-fireproof materials caused similar catastrophes. Many people seen dancing or filming in these videos are believed to be among the victims who died or are in critical condition. Many attendees remained unaware of the fire until it was too late, endangering lives. Emergency response was delayed as guests filmed rather than evacuated. Thoughts and prayers to the grieving families. 🇨🇭🙏 #news #PublicService #FireSafety #NewYearsChaos #ViralNews #PublicSafety #newyear #viral #Fire #CransMontana #NewYearsTragedy #SwitzerlandFire #Switzerland #WorldNews #WorldEvents #GlobalEvents #GlobalNews #NewYearsEve #Trending #FOUNews

The FSB "loved" the Azov op, Marsalek told Roussev.... that is, until it didn't. Hilariously, Lubyanka complained that using Azov's actual bank details for this caper violated Russian law. Marsalek was pissed, which only shows he's learned nothing since the GRU recruited him in 2014. As any halfway decent Russian spy could have told him, and as his Tatiana surely knows, assassins and saboteurs are one thing; but you never, ever mess with Tatiana from Accounting.

Great investigation by Profil, an Austrian magazine, into how fugitive Wirecard COO and decade-long GRU agent Jan Marsalek, now living in Russia, planned to spread anti-Ukraine sentiment in Germany and France by posting false-flag Azov stickers all over both countries. The goal? To "start World War III," as Marsalek put it in his leaked Telegram chats. profil.at/investigativ/c…

@Shayan86 There is a similar occasional controversy between speakers of Austrian German and Germans In Austrian there is ¼, ½ and even ¾ 10 (9:15,9:30,9:45), whereas Germans would only accept ½ 10=9:30 while ¼10 = ¼ *past* 10 and ¾10 = "WTF, Austrians"

I used to work 6am - 6pm, 6 days a week, on a construction site in my early 20s. Honestly? It fucking sucked, dude. I would sit in my car outside the site at 530am, desperately drinking a coffee, telling myself over and over again, "god I wish I was in sciences" Because every night when I got home what did I do? Watch Walter Levin MIT Open Courseware physics lectures. I had already exhausted all the popular science books long before so just started on undergrad level physics. The alternative was drinking a six pack of beer like everyone else and watching bullshit TV. The construction site job was actually better than what I was doing before. Landscaping, stone masonry shit. Backbreaking labor, truly. Breaking concrete slabs up with a sledgehammer and carrying bricks all day. That's literally a punishment in prison. There was a company event for the property development Corp doing the construction I was working for where everyone talked about their degrees. Most people had been at the company for almost a decade, did random unrelated degrees. I realized. If I didn't take control of my life the years would tick by. So I went back to school for engineering physics at age, like, 25. I probably wouldn't graduate until I was 30, but shit. You're going to turn 30 one day anyway. Might as well be doing something you chose. A year into schooling I had my first paying job in a physics lab, basically minimum wage, but my god. I was getting paid to work in a physics lab. I could drink coffee and read papers, build cool stuff. It was insane. The kids around me had no idea how lucky we were to be there. They hadn't suffered being trapped in dead end jobs that leave you too exhausted to really think, plan, get ahead. So I viciously worked my ass off through out engineering physics to play the game as best I could. Get the best internships, connections, etc. By the end of undergrad I was taking graduate level classes and outperforming the PhD students at them. Everything since then had gone better than I could've imagined. I used to think - wow, the dream would be designing fusion reactors, if only. Now I have patents in fusion reactor design. I've worked on particle accelerators, LEO satellite communications, beam driven fusion devices, finite element analysis for RF source design at SLAC. So no. Fuck mind breaking manual labor. Leave it for the robots. Choose your own path. I will say though. There are few things as therapeutic and full body workout as shoveling sand. I can show you at least a dozen different sand shoveling techniques to work every muscle in your upper body. Also wheelbarrow technique.
Cleobug101@cleobug101

men need to be working real jobs again. muscle and a shovel style jobs. testosterone levels would rise and men would feel like they had a purpose again. men yearn for the oil rigs and coal mines not the excel spreadsheets and 9-5 grind. we've neutered them, one business day at a time.

Question Do we have any contemporary non-Roman criticism of Rome (republic/empire), that has been passed to us directly, and not as a quotation in a Roman text? Like someone saying Rome is bad because X, Y, Z and all of that not being a quote in some Latin treatise
