ATTACK TARGETING MUSLIMS IN EDINBURGH
The terrorist attack targeting Muslims in Edinburgh is extremely distressing and must be treated with the utmost seriousness. The involvement of counter-terrorism police reflects the gravity of what occurred.
This attack did not happen in a vacuum. Anti-Muslim hatred, demonisation and irresponsible rhetoric have consequences. Those who normalise prejudice against Muslims in politics, the media and public life must be held accountable for the climate they help create.
The government must respond with visible solidarity, clear condemnation of anti-Muslim hatred and decisive action to tackle its root causes. Muslims deserve the same protection, support and national concern afforded to any community targeted by terrorism.
We cannot claim to stand against extremism while treating attacks differently depending on who the victims are.
