I've never strayed from this opinion and never stopped sayng it (as the podcast back catalogue will testify). Now some chief architects of the madness, who dragged English rugby through the mud, are positioning themselves as the solution, without a hint of self awareness 3/3

I worked on Premiership coverage for 7 years, when content celebrating legal big hits were taken off air because of "optics". I was regularly told I was "irresponsible" for talking about enjoying legal, codified violence as a key ingredient in rugby's sporting competition 2/3

@jonodeee I'm a long time advocate of captains challenge and also not constantly tinkering with laws. Still...doesn't excuse shocking quality of some of the coverage.

@cocker The coverage is a symptom of the core problem which is some rules in this complex sport are too grey and open to interpretation. WR needs to target consistently problematic laws & update them/make them clearer. Captain challenges need to be introduced to reduce controversy too.

The "football-ification" of rugby is going too far. Referees becoming the story when there's 80 minutes of rugby to dissect. And the TV coverage is a catalyst. Everyone's guilty of it, but Stan Sports may be the most egregious culprits. Detracts from a great game #NZLvAUS

@rugbyexpansion Sure. If you take a select clip and ignore the sentence before and after and any nuance - of which their is much - then you can make anyone say anything. But usually that's only done by people who have an opinion already and are just seeking confirmation of it.

@cocker I mean yes you’re right but i’ve just watched a little clip of you from this morning where you open with “did the officials have their best game? No”. That will in itself cause a pile on. And what makes it worse; i’ve watched it back and they weren’t even bad!

This is perfectly put by @cocker from @RugbyPodcast . Take a minute to watch it. Stan Sport’s coverage was a mess, and I really hope those responsible take a hard look at themselves. Not the first time either. it was there against the Lions too, but this one was on another level. Hopefully they learn from this and keep their commentary balanced for both sides.
