“I'm an old JUCO ball coach. I drove on 16 passenger fans. I drove from Kansas to Arizona for a basketball game... If you had told me back then that I'm getting to coach basketball in the Sweet 16.. I would sign up for it, I would crawl to get there.

The data on the Knicks offense with x5 on Hart (follow @ShaxNBA - he's been all over it) is not good. So why has Mike Brown decided to stick with Hart in the SL when the data suggests its a mistake? I don't pretend to have the answer. I think it is some combination of A) He (like Thibs) believes the Knicks can play better when defended in this way and B) The non-measurables. Anyone that has done any coaching know the emotional status of the players is paramount. Frankly, anyone on the outside has poor visibility in this space. As i've mentioned here before, that is a significant information gap. I think a component to Hart starting is not something we have a metric for. I think the frustation with many is we have an abundance of metrics at out disposal. This is wonderful. More data is good! But one can certainly weigh these metrics too heavily compared to the intangible nature of basketball. How do you measure the value of a player's confidence? What if that same player provides intangible leadership qualities? Benching Hart in favor of a more dangerous shooter is reasonable. It is a stance backed by data. The difference in opinion among the fanbase and among content creators is healthy. It has forced me to be better in analyzing the pros/cons in this area. The debate is robust and that is beautiful. I am not anti-data. I am anti-absolutism.

Mark Daigneault was asked by @BannedMacMahon how OKC is avoiding complacency during its historic start: “You have to understand anything in the past takes you out of the present moment. Anything in the future takes you out of the present moment. And the competition happens in the present moment.”
