"Not YOU." You literally capitalized the word YOU while telling me I should have been diagnosed with ADHD

@uncle_deluge @glassemall @RevanWashington Not YOU. (Reading comprehension seems to be an issue in this thread) You said your brother was bouncing and inattentive, which led the teachers to discipline and lean into the anti-anxiety meds which deadened him mentally. It sounds like ADHD might have been a more-accurate d/x

The "2nd grade teacher wants to destroy me for reading ahead" experience is a subset of the broader canon experience of realizing many people with influence & power not only don't want what's best for you, a child, but actively root against you & may even intervene to harm you

@memeticsisyphus The crazy thing about this is liberals think this is an invalid hang-up on the part of right wingers. Like bro you want govt employees running every aspect of our lives, shouldn't you be a little concerned it can't even choose teachers who won't beef with 7-year-olds?

NexusMods reportedly took down a Cloak and Dagger mod, turning them into elves for Marvel Rivals, citing: "This is not a fantasy race situation; this is you changing the race of a character from a marginalized group in the USA." When asking a mod in Discord, the designer was told, "We're not talking about your moderation actions in here. Stop pushing it." The designer reposted the mod with Cloak having darker skin to appease them. Why is this mod site so censorious?

To me, dinosaurs always fit well into fantasy roleplaying. The VERY FIRST gaming product I did - the Gateway Bestiary - included a chapter with dinosaur stats. It also included Lovecraft monsters - the first time (as far as I can tell) these beasties had been statted out. Rick Becker did the front cover art as one big drawing. Awesomely he mispelled the name of the game “Runequst” right there and no one caught it until I was sent my first copy.

Why did they use anti-german propaganda for the "Black Brute"?
Mohammed El-Kurd@m7mdkurd

The difference between the two photos is that the Vogue cover is an editorial, meaning the photographer made the conscious choice to curate a racist caricature of a black man, whereas the Israeli settler simply Just Looks Like That. This whole controversy around the L’Espresso cover is reminding me how much I held my tongue as a teenager, afraid that I would sound crazy if I repeated what I saw settlers doing. For example, one of the Jewish settlers who lived in the stolen half (yes, half) of our house in Jerusalem would repeatedly do unspeakable, perverted things to a German Shepherd they kept in the house. Whenever international activists came to visit, I'd tell them that the settlers beat the dog, which was true, but I often omitted the part about the sexual abuse--something about naming it outright made me feel dirty, as if complicit (I was also very young) until one day the settler did it while two European activists were present. He most likely wanted to be watched. A couple days later, there was a graffiti on our wall that said something like "settlers are very, very strange people." The way Israeli settlers are depicted in the media is, in fact, very often understated. I assume people worry about coming across as conspiratorial or bigoted, so they often hesitate to report the full extent of such depravity. But at the end of the day, it is really not our problem that many Jewish settlers are quite frankly caricatures of themselves.

There is an old, probably-untrue story that Frederick the Great tried this - raising a group of orphans and ordering the caretakers not to speak around them. In the story, Frederick’s purpose was to find out the ur-language that humans would have without education. Apparently he thought it might be Hebrew. As the tale goes, all the children died as babies, through the lack of cooing, lullabies, and baby talk. I’ve often wanted to adapt this idea as a mad plan in a Call of Cthulhu game. Suggestions welcomed.

The “forbidden experiment” — raising a child with no language exposure — is forbidden for very good reasons. But has anyone studied the opposite, what happens to children in extreme polyglot households? Like where they’re hearing 8 languages with equal regularity from birth?

Food delivery has killed brands. Too often I hear from people who speak poorly about a new spot, or a great restaurant, they tell me they got it via door dash or uber eats. It was cold, soggy, etc. then they never go visit again as opposed to eating fresh hot food on site. It’s a real risk doing delivery and it rarely pays off, that’s why most restaurant itemize it as a marketing expense.

Anytime I hear people talking about Brandon Sanderson I alway mistake it for Brandon Mull since both are Mormons who write fantasy.

Brandon Sanderson on why he would not finish George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones even if he was asked: "I wouldn't say yes to finishing ASOIAF, if asked. (And I don't think they'd ask me.) I'd respectfully decline. I wouldn't be right for the job for many reasons. I wouldn't want to put in the content that the series has, and part of that is due to my religious faith, part of it is just who I am. I don't shy away from difficult material, but I prefer not to get explicit. Honestly, when I read it in George's work, I often just cringe. I don't think it fits in prose; I think it looks tacky. But that's almost 100% due to the my religious leanings. I realize that others don't read such scenes in the same way as I do. However, I'd suggest that this is actually a minor reason why I'd be a bad writer on this series, despite having enormous respect for GRRM and his talent as a storyteller. The primary reason has to do with fundamental optimism vs pessimism. I write darkness into my books, but it is darkness as contrast to light, and there is always a spark of hope. George's work seems fundamentally pessimistic--which I don't say as a slam. One of my favorite short stories is Harrison Bergeron, which is also fundamentally pessimistic. Saying George's work is pessimistic doesn't mean that HE is pessimistic, only that he creates a work of art that evokes emotion and discussion through pessimistic themes. As a comparison, I'm glad that Silver Age science fiction produced both Harrison Bergeron and Star Trek--but I'm Star Trek, not Harrison Bergeron. Calling me in to work on this piece would be like calling in Spielberg to finish a Tarantino film. (Not to imply I deserve to be ranked with either one.) Sure, he could do it, but wouldn't you want someone who themselves makes films with Tarantino-like themes? My work is also fundamentally different from George's in our use of magic. We've talked about books, and he points out (rightly) that I often use a heavily magical component in my stories--particularly the endings. This is because I'm writing science/magic hybrids, and the idea of magic as progress is fascinating to me. George, however, prefers his magic to be arcane, unknown, and dark--not a tool, but a force you can sometimes (with great danger) apply. This is a small issue, as I'm fond of books that use magic differently, I've just made a stylistic choice in how I do what I do." Do you think this still holds?
