@maciejwalkowiak Totally unrelated question, but what monitoring too do you use to graph metrics per deployment version?

@zack_overflow @penberg Would it be interesting to have a rust linter rule to make sure an allocator is passed as a parameter upfront for some projects?

Yes, like how Rust forces you to think about mutability upfront (and that's a good thing for safety and reducing complexity), Zig forces you to think about allocation upfront (and that's a good thing for performance) In Rust, if I want to use an allocator that is faster for my use-case, I have to change all the code that wants to use the new allocator to accept it as a parameter It gets tricky because of mutability and references and lifetimes. You basically have to change a lot of code In Zig, any codepath that allocates memory will accept an Allocator interface anyway. This makes it really easy to use a bump allocator or a general purpose one if you need it

It's funny how often optimizing fast-path turns into figuring out a better memory allocation pattern. With Rust, I end up writing code with lots of short-lived objects, which can be hard to optimize later. I wonder if Zig has better defaults here with its explicit allocations...

AI-assisted code reading with Cursor/GPT is awesome, but sometimes you learn more by being old school and reaching to your bookshelf. Mel Gorman’s book is almost 20 years old now but still helpful!

warning: very biased opinion but, for developer tools: you don't need a "PM" you need "an empathetic engineer, who is so frustrated with the experience of doing their work that they're willing to become a PM to change the state of the world for themselves and their colleagues"

@ahachete I have a theory that people disdain for the JVM is rooted in disdain for bad java code bases. When you dig into it, JVM is clearly a marvel of engineering.

Why would it have higher overhead? If anything, Java GC is 1-2 decades ahead of Go's GC. This is actually the very same reason I see little value in Go: for a GCed lang, pick the best in the category, which is Java. JVM has many and very advanced GCs. Check them out.
Matt Boyle@MattJamesBoyle

@phamduchieu No idea truthfully. Never really dug into the Java GC. Looks like it uses the same algorithm though. Since Java uses the JVM I would imagine it has higher overhead

@muratdemirbas Tbf the reason we should not deploy on Friday is because debugging a prod issue over the weekend is very annoying. If the issue only manifest on Monday, it would be a business as usual.

Do not deploy on Friday… we have seen a failure in which a weekend load/traffic reduction masked increased resource usage of a new version deployed on Friday. The system failed after the load returned on Monday. charap.co/metastable-fai…
