I deeply respect Yamamuro-san, and it pains me to see him receiving hate from overseas fans. The general claim is that his work during the DBZ era was great, but that quality gradually declined. However, listening closely to their criticism, the hate directed at Yamamuro-san is not actually about the animation drawings themselves, but about the highlights and coloring. I can fully understand that this comes from a place of love for Dragon Ball.
It is understandable that general fans, unfamiliar with the production environment, mistakenly assumed that Yamamuro-san — being such an influential figure in the animation — was responsible for these decisions. However, since Dragon Ball is produced within a corporation called Toei Animation, just as in any other company, the boss bears ultimate responsibility. This is true whether in Japan, overseas, or on any animation production floor. There is no way Yamamuro-san could have made these decisions alone. The responsibility lies with the directors and series directors, and in a broader sense, with Toei Animation itself.
Furthermore, as touched upon in the YouTube video referenced, coloring is completely outside of Yamamuro-san's area of expertise. It is not his responsibility, nor is it solely the color designer's responsibility. Just as in any general company, these are matters decided through discussions at the upper management level. Moreover, Yamamuro-san does not even belong to Toei Animation — he is affiliated with a separate company entirely.
Directing hate at an individual by name on the internet is something I can only describe as Dragon Ball love gone in the wrong direction. Please try to imagine how Yamamuro-san must feel — someone who has worked so hard for so many years supporting Dragon Ball — upon being targeted with unfounded criticism by name. Please try to imagine how deeply it must hurt him. He is a creator. It goes without saying that, by nature of his sensitivity, he is more susceptible to being hurt than most.
I have witnessed with my own eyes animators who, having been hurt and having lost their confidence, gradually lose the brilliance in their work. Please consider that by participating in this kind of behavior, you are contributing to exactly that.
And please also consider that you are causing pain to other fans who love Dragon Ball just as much as you do.
I sincerely hope that my intention comes across clearly.

Yamamuro's drawings are still incredibly skilled even now. I receive the director's drawings for correction at work, and I could tell at a glance.
As expected, the movements were truly those of a martial arts master.
