“Justice is delayed and denied”: Richmond’s late jury lists are derailing criminal trials “It’s only until the last 72 hours that the case is yanked out from under you, and that's just devastating to victims and witnesses.” @CBS6 wtvr.com/news/local-new…

IRE calls for the immediate release of Estefany Rodríguez, a reporter for Nashville Noticias and Univision 42 Nashville, who was taken into custody while in a marked news vehicle, according to reports. Detaining journalists for doing their jobs is a direct threat to press freedom and the First Amendment. We stand with Rodríguez and all reporters working to hold power accountable. It was a harrowing experience that left him shaken and uncertain about his future. He's back home in Virginia Beach now, but his attorney has told him and his wife that he will probably be deported. Read his story, via gift link: pilotonline.com/2026/03/06/vir…

I spoke with an asylum seeker from Honduras about his month in immigration detention. He got out because the government couldn't justify holding him.

Three years ago, Irvo Otieno died after Henrico County (VA) sheriff’s deputies pinned the 28-year-old to the floor during a mental health crisis. A crisis should be met with care, not force. We still demand accountability while lifting up his mother Caroline and brother Leon today. Rest In Power.

!!! (Reuters) - The U.S. Department of State on Monday called on Americans to immediately depart more than a dozen countries in the Middle East amid U.S-Israeli strikes against Iran. New: The strike yesterday in Kuwait that has now claimed the lives of six US service members was a direct hit on a makeshift operations center — in what was described as a triple wide trailer — at the port of Shuaiba, a source familiar said. The strike came so quickly there were no sirens or warning to allow troops to evacuate to a bunker ahead of time. Thinking of them and their loved ones. cnn.com/2026/03/02/pol…

New: @GovernorVA says she’s been briefed on the positions of the Virginia National Guard in the Middle East. Earlier today, I reported that about 150 VNG soldiers have been in the Middle East since July. In addition, the Virginia Air National Guard is supporting Operation Epic Fury.
Governor Abigail Spanberger@GovernorVA

I’ve been briefed on the positions of Virginia National Guard personnel in the region, including those who supported this operation. I remain in communication with the Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs. I’m focused on the safety of Virginians in the region.

The DOJ unsealed its indictment against the contractor on Feb. 20. It's a rare criminal prosecution of labor trafficking, which advocates say is often underreported and underinvestigated. The department did not respond to questions about what made this particular case stand out.

There's a continued repositioning of Navy warships in and around the Middle East as the U.S. openly deliberates an attack on Iran. On Monday, there are eight U.S. warships in the Arabian Sea: - The carrier USS Abraham Lincoln - The destroyers USS Frank E. Petersen Jr., USS Spruance, USS Delbert D. Black, USS McFaul, USS Pinckney - The littoral combat ships USS Santa Barbara and USS Tulsa Two more destroyers, USS Michael Murphy and USS Mitscher, are in the Gulf of Oman. A third LCS, USS Canberra, remains in the Persian Gulf. Delbert D. Black relocated in the last few days from the Red Sea. Pinckney arrived last week from the Pacific region. The destroyers USS Bulkeley and USS Roosevelt remain in the Mediterranean Sea. They are joined by the USS Gerald R. Ford, a second aircraft carrier, and its escort ships. Pentagon officials are now declining to comment on the location of the Ford group, but ship-tracking data place it in/around Souda Bay, Greece. Would not be a surprise to see at least some of the Ford group move to or through the Red Sea in coming days.

My latest, with @propublica + @NYTmag: An Oklahoma law was supposed to help reduce the sentences of domestic violence survivors who fought back -- women who are serving long sentences for killing their abusers. Why are nearly all of them still in prison? propublica.org/article/oklaho…
