@engineering_bae 0% was the company saying we don’t have it to give. Even though the profits were in the billions. Investing billions into AI instead of their people was more important apparently.

I have been curious, what have baseline raises looked like at people’s companies for folks who didn’t get a promo? From my convos it seems like 3-5%. ZIRP era is part of it but some lackluster raises are because companies know it’s an employer’s market. It can feel crappy, but that’s how the pendulum swings. Continue to learn, beef out your skills, and do your best to make sure whatever you’re doing aligns with what you leaders believe brings the company the most value.

@engineering_bae 4 years… 0%, 2%, 0%, 2.5%. Company wonders why attrition rates are so high. No promos for 3 years straight unless you are offshore.

@engineering_bae i do agree but there's an issue. not even sure it's actually solvable tbh. if you are looking for another job and its seen, you don't get to tell that story. people see and think what they want regardless of context. can hurt your chances to get those first calls.

I also know leaders that swing back and forth between IC and management. It keeps them technically sharp their entire careers. So if he can do well in the role and tell the story right, it may not be viewed as a step back.

And not for everything, but for things my husband and I do together like vacation. When people ask what I think about Argentina and Peru, I've noticed myself saying "we".

I used to think it was weird when married people would answer questions as "we" even when their partner wasn't around. Now look at me...talking about all this "we" like I'm French or something 😂

I sent a Google Director of Engineering role to a few friends to get insight on it. It was meant to help another friend who is job hunting, but a couple of my friends thought I could do the job and should apply. While I know I wouldn’t be able to land the role (especially in this economy), I realized my mom isn’t the only one who consistently hypes me up for mildly nutso side quests 😂

@engineering_bae Also my favorite. The best thing though? You can get an americano in literally any country and it will always be made right and it will be good.

TIL I really like Americanos. Thank goodness I found a way to minimize all the milk consumption from daily Lattes and Cortados.

Second day back from PTO and for some odd reason I’m referring to everything as a “bad boy”. “Anyone have bandwidth to look into this bad boy?” “Where are we with this bad boy?” “That bad boy is always a pain in the butt, we’ll have to look into how to lessen the impact” Who am I?!

@engineering_bae So I put my resume into ChatGPT and Gemini and asked how much I should be making and what jobs I should be applying for. Let’s just say I was well below the mark and as soon as I started applying, I got an interview. We talking like $100 K more. Crazy
