@madelineefry we like to ask for handmade cards instead of gifts; my son keeps them and pins them up in his bedroom & playroom. they're great treasures.

Are you a parent of young kids? Did you ask people not to bring gifts to their birthday parties? I want to hear from you!

@C0ll3ct0r_D0LL in case it makes you feel better, hanging bird feeders from a pole doesn't deter rats. they are excellent climbers and jumpers. capsaicin helps a bit with both rats and squirrels but the only real solution is getting rid of the bird feeders entirely

I never understood the obsession with dresses that have pockets, it feels weirdly millennial and performative don’t you have purses? tote bags?

@__apf__ But how did he know that was cause of the measurement error unless he knew to check the level but waited until AFTER it was too late?

appreciate the chutzpah of the contractor who just called me to insist a measurement error isn't his fault because he, the man who took the measurements, had no way of knowing that the surfaces are not level

@EmbracingTara I’m Pentecostal too, and this is what I wear to swim. Modest swimwear doesn’t have to mean being covered from head to toe. A lot of it is Pharisaic and performative.

If women are truly seeking to be "modest", undefiled modesty is first found in the heart, and includes a pure desire to not draw attention to one's self in a performative display of piety. The type of swim attire in the post would attract far more attention than simply wearing a fuller coverage 'regular' bathing suit (e.g. a tankini with boy shorts). In fact, my example doesn't even accentuate the curves as much as the first and blends in even more, attracting less attention. So, if "modesty" is the goal, try less performative attention seeking behavior.

@SassySouthBlond @Alexandrovna805 I've done it 1000 times. It is fine. A wedding dress or party dress would be dangerous, but how would a sundress be? It weighs nothing (holds little water) and you have full range of motion. By what mechanism would you drown...?

@SassySouthBlond @Alexandrovna805 nah I jump in my pool wearing sundresses all the time. assuming you aren't wearing wool or jeans, it's fine. much easier to swim in a sundress than everyone makes it out to be. they don't get heavy. not gonna win a race but won't drown from it

@nicholascarrigg @Oroborous2 we also have a stone stacked wall, but deer need fencing at least 7' high. I don't think we could build a purely stacked wall to 7' without using mortar. so we have secondary fencing (either wood or metal mesh depending on where on our property) behind the stone stacked wall

It's completely unrelated to her post. She's saying: among Americans, those of Italian and Irish descent have intermarried at very high rates due to being Catholic immigrants in the same cities and trades. And then she asks: do actual Italians and Irish people intermarry at similar rates? She clearly already understands by the question itself that Irish people and Americans of Irish descent are two distinct groups

@CatholicCharm Your first reply after my comment was very defensive imo. If there's a mis understanding I apologize. I merely said , you are American, and we are Irish. Italians are Italians. In Ireland we class you as foreigners, Americans and some say 'yanks' . That's it. What's offensive ?

@benpicko @the_transit_guy most of the length of the embarcadero looks like this right? it is very lovely. it would be even nicer if they knocked down the waterfront buildings and had it straight open to the water on the other side of the embarcadero like Venice or Santa Barbara

@gamergate2077 I love the backstory: a group of guys easily took the unprotected fort and then realized they were going to be treated as criminals unless it was a political act, so they hastily made this flag with supplies in hand. And then Gen Vallejo just shrugged and rolled with it

@__apf__ @drvolts @systemlayers I am not saying this is good or bad design, mind you. Just an explanation why a graphic depicting the room usage of my house would show the formal dining room to be the least used spaced in the house, yet we have all our meals together in the “informal” dining room in the kitchen

So, yeah, I do a lot of Zillow surfing to relax. And some of the design choices of contemporary homes baffle me. This house has something 99% of new houses are missing: a mud room! Who wants to tromp straight from outside into a living room? zillow.com/homes/for_sale…

@flvmartorelli like many Californians, I speak Spanish and do not speak Italian. puta in Spanish means whore or slut. I guessed at the meaning of the cognate with Italian and was very surprised it's a true cognate, not a false friend

at lunch I had pasta puttanesca and I thought, surely that doesn't mean "whore pasta." it must be a funny Italian/Spanish cognate. but actually it turns out it really does mean whore pasta
