Why is there a Canadian 🇨🇦 on the @NASAArtemis mission? Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut Jeremy Hansen was selected for NASA’s Artemis II mission—the first crewed flight of the Artemis program—because of a formal international partnership agreement between NASA and Canada. In the late 2010s, NASA was developing the Lunar Gateway (a planned small space station in lunar orbit to support long-term Moon exploration). Canada was the **first international partner** to commit to the program in 2019. In a 2020 agreement, the CSA pledged to build and provide **Canadarm3**—a next-generation, AI-enabled robotic arm (building on Canada’s proven track record with the original Canadarm for the Space Shuttle and Canadarm2 on the ISS). In direct exchange, NASA committed to **two crew flight opportunities** for Canadian astronauts on Artemis missions: one on Artemis II and one to the Gateway (though Gateway development has since been paused in favor of a lunar surface base, the Artemis II seat remained). This is the same model used for the International Space Station: partners who contribute hardware, funding, or expertise receive seats on missions. Canada’s early and substantial commitment (including ~$2 billion CAD over 24 years for lunar robotics and related work) earned it this historic seat. In short, Hansen’s assignment (announced in 2023) is the direct result of decades of Canadian expertise in space robotics, Canada’s early commitment to Artemis, and the explicit NASA–CSA agreement.
