Just recently, Keir Starmer sat him down in Downing Street like they were sorting out trade deals over biscuits. You cannot help but wonder what we have come to. In April 2013 al-Sharaa swore loyalty to al-Qaida and Ayman al-Zawahiri after falling out with ISIS. By July 2016 he was on camera praising them and renaming his outfit Jabhat Fatah al-Sham. It was never a secret. America spotted it early. In May 2013 they listed him as a specially designated global terrorist, freezing anything he owned that touched US soil and banning Americans from any dealings with him. The UN followed in July with its own sanctions, asset freeze, travel ban, the lot. Under his watch the al-Nusra Front turned parts of Syria into a graveyard for ordinary people. They carried out hundreds of attacks, including more than forty suicide bombings in the first couple of years alone. By June 2013 they had claimed fifty-seven of the seventy suicide attacks across the whole country. Many hit crowded civilian areas. Take May 2012. A double car bombing in Damascus killed at least fifty-five people and wounded over four hundred, with plenty of bystanders caught in the blast. October 2012 brought three car bombs in a busy Aleppo square that left forty-eight dead. February 2013 saw another wave in Damascus claim eighty-three lives, most of them women and children. These were not quiet operations. The group bragged about them. They went much further than bombs. In the summer of 2013, during the Latakia offensive, al-Nusra fighters joined other jihadists in storming over a dozen Alawite villages. Human Rights Watch put the civilian death toll at around 190. People were shot in their homes, stabbed, or burned alive. Whole families wiped out. More than two hundred others were taken hostage, many never seen again. Reports described sectarian killings, torture and sexual violence aimed at Alawites, seen as loyal to Assad. The pattern repeated. In June 2013 they hit the Shia town of Hatla and massacred between thirty and sixty civilians. They kidnapped thirteen Christian nuns from a monastery in Maaloula in December 2013. By 2015 they had snatched hundreds of Kurdish civilians from checkpoints. That same June they swept into the Druze village of Qalb Loze in Idlib. A row over a house turned bloody when a Tunisian al-Nusra commander and his men opened fire. At least twenty Druze residents died, including elderly people and a child, shot house to house. In 2016 they attacked the Alawite village of Zara’a, killing forty-two civilians and kidnapping dozens more. These were not slip-ups in battle. They were deliberate. Target minorities, spread terror, punish anyone outside their strict vision. Christians, Druze, Shia, Alawites, Kurds. Forced conversions, executions, looting. Ordinary Syrians paid with their lives. Families torn apart. Kids left without parents. Villages emptied. His ideology stayed rock solid through it all. A hard-line Salafi-jihadist trained in Iraq under Zarqawi, he wanted Assad gone, strict sharia law in its place, and anyone who disagreed driven out or worse. Even when al-Nusra folded into Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in 2017, the core stayed loyal to al-Qaida’s vision. He may not lead HTS on paper now, but he built it and he shaped it. December 2024 to February 2025: Early revenge attacks hit Alawite areas in Latakia, Tartus, Hama and Homs. Gunmen from HTS-linked units and local Sunni groups carried out killings, arson and looting in villages like Tasnin and al-Hamam. At least 151 sectarian deaths were recorded, many civilians shot in their homes or forced to flee.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has stated that a Pakistani national identified as Muhammad Shahzeb Khan has pleaded guilty to the charge against him of attempting to carry out a terrorist attack in New York.
