I didn't sign "the letter".
Current AI poses lots of risks, but describing these systems as "ever more powerful digital minds" that no one can control is likely to make the problem even worse.
What's needed: more transparency and better public discourse.
"programming is serious and not a game [..] stop with the outfits and princess programmer stuff"
I think we should all start writing software and giving talks while wearing princess dresses. 👸👗👩💻
@todpunk@chrisdotio@timClicks I totally agree. However, we cannot limit learning a language due to the community being toxic. Also, the fundamental error here is assuming that the whole community is toxic
@chrisdotio@finalfire@timClicks I personally prefer to think of it a little more broadly. You can not separate a programming language from its ecosystem. Part of that is the groups of people that form around it, and part of that is libraries, practices, etc. People can be ignored, ecosystem can not.
Received this today..
"One of the reasons I don't ever want to use rust is because of the people. They are just too toxic. Always insulting other programming languages. It's just annoying. I chose to learn C++ instead of Rust just because it's toxic community."
