The request for relaxation in wheat procurement due to untimely rainfall was received on 9th April 2026. Promptly thereafter, teams were deputed on 10th April to assess the situation across all districts. Based on field inputs, the Centre Govt. led by PM Shri @NarendraModi ji has approved relaxations for wheat procurement under the Rabi Marketing Season (RMS) 2026–27 in all districts of Punjab and the Union Territory of Chandigarh. This decision will help reduce hardship for farmers and prevent any distress sale of wheat. The relaxations will be applicable from the commencement of RMS 2026–27.

Why are the Opposition’s alternatives impractical? 1. No increase in seats for implementing women’s reservation This will reduce the number of seats in the South, as 543 seats need to be distributed on a population basis, severely disadvantaging the southern states. This is precisely what the government wants to avoid. 2. GSDP-linked model - (Suggested by CM Shri Revanth Reddy) Ties representation to economic output and GSDP, making it biased toward richer states like Maharashtra and Gujarat. GSDP is a volatile and cyclical figure, and the delimitation of seats cannot be based on it. It has no relevance to the value of a vote and goes against constitutional principles.. 3. Degressive proportionality model similar to EU(Suggested by MP Shri Shashi Tharoor) Gives unequal value to votes based on geography - against the core democratic principle of equal representation. These ideas don’t protect the South - they just redistribute the problem, often leaving states like Tamil Nadu & Karnataka worse off. The most balanced solution is the current proposal by the PM Narendra Modi Ji-led government which suggests a 50% increase in seats, giving equal importance and representation to all states.

Was the Women’s Reservation Bill’s journey easy? No. First introduced in 1996, it stayed pending for nearly 30 years due to repeated delays and political issues. At least six times, the Bill was introduced, but on one pretext or another, parties now in the opposition delayed, disrupted and ensured it did not see the light of day. Where does the 50% increase come from when it is not mentioned in the Bill? What is the guarantee? The answer lies in Article 81 of the Constitution. Article 81 lays down how seats are to be distributed across states based on population. Once the total number of seats is increased, this provision determines the method of apportionment. A plain reading of Article 81 makes this clear. The problem is the Opposition either comes unprepared, or chooses not to engage with the substance, opposing for the sake of opposing. Will a larger Lok Sabha become “unwieldy”? This argument doesn’t hold. The quality of Parliament depends on the seriousness of debate and the number of sittings, not the number of members. In 1952, Lok Sabha sat for around 135 days a year. Today, it has dropped to nearly 55 days, largely due to repeated disruptions. If the House expands, sittings must increase proportionately. That is how you ensure better debate, greater participation and stronger representation. The problem is not the size of the House, it is the conduct of the Opposition. Is delimitation being brought in through the “backdoor,” as alleged by the Opposition? For decades, the number of Lok Sabha seats has remained frozen even as India’s population has grown significantly, from about 55 crore in 1971 to nearly 140 crore today. Today, each MP represents a much larger population, impacting effective representation and accessibility.
