Can I ask a quick question on this? Please don’t yell at me.
If this continues, does Mo get credit for the “rebuild” given the fact that basically every young player currently on the roster was drafted &/or developed while he was in charge?
Thomas Gauvain@thomasgauvain
I've had two thoughts rattling lately given the #STLCards hot start: 1. Will Chaim Bloom speed up his "long-term" timeline? 2. This must be the most successful rebuild over the last ~15 years.

Pirates fans want this Konnor Griffin deal to mean the team is finally investing.
But it’s actually the opposite.
This isn’t the #Pirates “spending more" ... it’s them making sure they never have to.

@Sooners80 @redbirdnerds @aRorschachTest I get that. It just seems unnecessary to me considering his position and how old he’ll be at the end of his current control
English

@fullspectrumice @redbirdnerds @aRorschachTest You are betting that you will pay less over 10 years with the extension. It not just paying more now for the hell of it.
English

@isaacthurman1 @redbirdnerds Of course I have. But STL has control for 5 years. He’ll be a 29 year old 2b when his control expires. I’m not convinced that that’s a cornerstone piece that needs to be locked in one month into his career.
English

@fullspectrumice @redbirdnerds Have you not seen so many other teams do this? Some with guys who haven’t even debuted yet. The idea is that it costs more now but saves you money on the backend and locks in a cornerstone player for 2 more prime years. Player salaries will only go up over time
English

@redbirdnerds @Sooners80 @aRorschachTest Super enlightened response. Please tell me why paying millions more now is better
English

@Sooners80 @redbirdnerds @aRorschachTest That’s great. One month at $700k for the season and maybe a couple mil next year. No need to over spend and over commit
English

@fullspectrumice @redbirdnerds @aRorschachTest Kid has a 126 wRC+ and 6 HR’s in his first month in the big leagues. Gets on base a ton.
English

@isaacthurman1 @redbirdnerds How are you saving money by locking in two more years he’s not under contract in his age 31-33 years when you’re over paying by millions over the next 5? You also mitigate risk if he gets hurt or just ends up sucking
English

@fullspectrumice @redbirdnerds 1. He isn’t a complete unknown. 2. You’re saving money in the long run if you extend him now and he reaches even some of his potential.
English

@C3dric83 @redbirdnerds @aRorschachTest It’s one stat. I never said it was the most important one. But pretending a sub .250 avg indicates a good hitter is not smart. Love ops and obp and slg etc. getting hits for a player like jj is going to be important bc he’s not a big power guy. Not sure how this doesn’t matter
English

@redbirdnerds @fullspectrumice @aRorschachTest You’re going back and forth with people posting batting average
English

@redbirdnerds @aRorschachTest I understand he’s making 700k and folks want to give him around 17 mil. Even if he maxes out arbitration years, he won’t make the same money over the next 5 seasons. Guaranteeing the money and yrs at this point is wasteful
English

@fullspectrumice @aRorschachTest You don’t understand how these contracts worth and that’s okay!
English

@redbirdnerds @aRorschachTest .250?! Wow, the best guy on your team can only maybe hit .250 and 20 bombs while playing (checks notes) second base. Hurry up and pay him 10x what you are already paying for!
I like JJ. He’s a good young player. Great obp. Don’t need to lock him in right now.
English

@aRorschachTest .350 on base. With his bat to ball skills it’s not unreasonable to expect a .250 average making his obp close to .400. Well worth an extension.
English

@isaacthurman1 @redbirdnerds But why? They have so much control already. It’s completely unrealistic to expect any player to have a 8+ year career at elite levels. No reason to pay whatever 5-7x more right now for a complete unknown.
English

@redbirdnerds In a year where the FO is largely getting a pass for their miserable spending, this is the thing fans should be all over them for. Every other team is extending their guys. He’s got as safe of a profile as you’ll find. Get it done
English

The Athletic puts JJ Wetherholt's approximate market value at 8 years, $135 million
Would you be happy if the #STLCards gave him that contract?

Yep. When Noot comes back it should be LF: Noot, CF: Church, RF: Walker. #stlcards

Nathan Church is a better CF option than Victor Scott. #STLCards
