Let's talk about Joc Pederson...AGAIN! He's batting 5th in our lineup today against the Reds and his numbers through 17 PAs are genuinely bad. Not slow-start bad. Bad bad. He's hitting .000 with a wRC+ of -52, which ranks 366th out of 373 qualified hitters in baseball. His wOBA is .083. His OBP is .118. The one number keeping me from completely panicking is his avg exit velo. At 97.2 mph it ranks 4th in all of baseball. The man is crushing the ball. He has a 75% hard hit rate. But there are zero barrels, zero hits, and his xwOBA is only .218, which tells you even the contact quality isn't translating to expected production the way you'd hope. That gap between the raw exit velo and the xwOBA is the problem. He's hitting the ball hard but not at optimal launch angles. The barrels just aren't there yet, and you need barrels to do damage. Andrew McCutchen on the other hand is making a case that he should be starting every day. His wRC+ is 213, which ranks 27th in baseball. His wOBA is .478. He has a 16.7% barrel rate and a 1.100 OPS. Cutch is 39 years old and is hitting like an MVP candidate through the first 10 days of the season. The uncomfortable question writes itself. With McCutchen raking at an elite level and Pederson yet to record a hit, Skip Schumaker has a real lineup decision coming. We're not going to bench Pederson on 17 PAs in April, and Evan Grant has been right before that these things work themselves out. But if Pederson doesn't start putting up barrels to match that exit velo soon, Cutch has earned himself a more permanent spot in this lineup.

@RangersFanCave I’m sorry I’m never making Duran my everyday 3B. He’s never shown that he can consistently hit major league pitching over an extended period of time. He has zero power, hit his first homer in 2 years, and he’s a big downgrade defensively.

The Josh Jung situation is becoming the most uncomfortable conversation in this lineup, and we need to have it. Jung is hitting .095 with a wRC+ of -50 through 21 PAs. That ranks 362nd out of 386 qualified hitters in baseball. His avg exit velo is 84.7 mph, which is soft contact territory. He has zero barrels, zero walks, and a 33.3% K-BB% that is trending in completely the wrong direction. His xwOBA is .149. There is no hidden good story in the Statcast data here. The argument for patience is real. It's 21 PAs and the sample is tiny. Jung has shown flashes of being a productive big league bat before. We know that. But here's what makes this complicated. Ezequiel Duran is sitting right there. Duran has a 160 wRC+ through 11 PAs, an ISO of .364 that ranks in the top 8% of the league, and a 50% hard hit rate. His xwOBA is only .174, so some regression is coming, and his BABIP is running hot. He's not suddenly an All-Star. But the contact quality gap between those two right now is real. Jung isn't just unlucky. He's hitting the ball softly and not walking. Duran is at least hitting it hard. At some point the lineup card has to reflect what the data is showing. We're 4-2 and the offense is clicking, but Jung is a significant drag at the 7-hole every night. I'd give him through this week, but if the exit velo doesn't climb, Duran has to start getting more at-bats at third.
