NEW: Howard County police fatal OIS with 25-year-old autistic man who approached officers with a knife during a wellness check
Howard County police responded to an apartment complex in Columbia after receiving a 911 call from a man making self-harm statements after claiming to be extorted online.
25-year-old Alexander LaMorie, who was autistic, approached officers in the parking lot while holding a knife.
LaMorie could be heard saying he wanted to be free of his pain and “the devil will get his due.”
Officers ordered him to drop the knife, but he refused.
LaMorie’s family called the death “senseless and callous” and said he had called for a wellness check.
