TVK claims to have emerged in Tamil Nadu politics as an alternative to both the DMK and the AIADMK. Yet, it has no qualms about admitting former AIADMK ministers and MLAs who are uncertain about their prospects in the AIADMK led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami. Does their past automatically get purified upon joining TVK, as though a dip in the Ganges can wash away all sins? This, we are told, is "alternative politics." We can only wonder what exactly is alternative about it. We are also asked to believe that it represents a "qualitative change," leaving us to speculate on what that quality might be. The reality is that many politicians, once they have tasted power and privilege, find it difficult to remain on the sidelines. The itch for political relevance rarely goes away.
