When TVK speaks of a contest between DMK and TVK, we now understand what they mean. For the key voter groups both parties are targeting, namely Christians, the poor, Scheduled Castes and Muslims, the real battle is between the Whistle and the Rising Sun. No wonder the DMK appears rattled. They were starting with a base of around 35% vote share before the entry of TVK. Now there is a growing concern that they could lose at least 15% of that support. The past three months seem to have been about trying to recover and consolidate this potential loss by adding a spate of allies. That also explains why the AIADMK is keen to leave very few seats for its allies in Chennai. The party senses that if its voters turn up, there is a real chance of victory, especially with the DMK’s vote base seen as depleted.

Let me be honest here: Betting on a new face in a high-stakes election is a massive gamble. While "new faces" sounds great on paper, the ground reality is often brutal. Newcomers first have to deal with the enemy within. Oftentimes, seasoned cadres will undermine the newcomer just to prove the party made the wrong call. For a new face, running a campaign is a logistical beast. Without experience in booth management and resource allocation, often an opponent can outmaneuver you. In competitive or closely contested seats, voters prefer someone who has been in the trenches for years; a new face has a huge challenge of building a lifetime of trust in just a few weeks before elections. Politics is never "on-the-job training." One small slip or a misunderstanding of local sentiment can be fatal. A new face is often walking on the ice. In a hyper-competitive setting, being "new" is often a liability, not an asset. Of course, people like Karthik Mohan or Vinod Gandhi aren't actually new faces, they know the field, and everyone already knows them. Nobody can take them for granted, not even remotely. The real challenge lies with about 40 to 45 out of 60 who are brand-new faces.
