@oceana_roll @TheMovieMermaid this is how I felt stargazing in the grasslands of Inner Mongolia; it felt like being in a snow-globe, the sky so all-consuming — feeling as if you could fall into it at any moment

@TheMovieMermaid Last night I saw a reel that said next time you’re stargazing, flip your perspective and tell yourself you’re looking down into space instead of up and the realize the only thing holding you onto earth is gravity

@astrogalaxy15 @serpentinerose The translator seems to have no respect for the official translations. They even said 'that's just an interpretation' when shown inages of official merch using 'An Zhe'. They also mocked the official translation quality.

@AzelfDaGirl he's a principled textualist that was radicalized by reading treaties that Congress made with tribes that were then ignored and/or violated by state governments

@BillyVonElds @BrianCAlbrecht indeed, and I think any decent econometrics curriculum will attempt to instill epistemic humility in students, so that they use those tools responsibly (I say attempt bc we can't guarantee the lesson will stick in 19-23 year olds)

@himbonomics @BrianCAlbrecht And my only point is there are constraints on how much you can “fix” flawed, real world data driven by millions of factors.

What I find confusing about this and would love to learn more is that people usually say the first year is the ideological one. But like intermediate micro? Econometrics 1 and 2? I’m genuinely curious how one could walk away from a degree thinking this
Seth Harp@sethharpesq

Not an economist but I did graduate first in my class from UT-Austin with a BA in econ and a strong suspicion that I had spent the last three years studying an ideological pseudoscience that had zero predictive power and was based on assumptions so untenable it was almost funny

@BrianCAlbrecht usually i roll my eyes at "how is this economics?" but this one is pushing it for me 😭 the methodology is undeniably clever, so atp I'm down to let economists cook wherever they want, spreading the good word of econometrics

@BillyVonElds @BrianCAlbrecht the assumptions we start with in econometrics, for classical linear regression, are there to illustrate the perfect ideal case and what claims of knowledge can follow from that, but the rest of the course covers what happens when those assumptions are violated, and how to fix it

@BrianCAlbrecht Nothing made me think economics was a pseudoscience more than early 2000s econometrics. Maybe the field has evolved but it felt like just inserting assumptions as crutches whenever the math failed. (I have a BA in Econ from Tufts, ‘05)

the whole approach is so vibes-based, especially when it comes to "primary allegiance" depending on not "being subject to" or "owing allegiance" to a "foreign power" — it's so abstract and subjective? maybe a nation-state formally claims allegiance from what they consider a "subject"... but what about the agency of the citizen? they left their home country intentionally; there's no extraterritoriality when it comes to sovereignty. they can also assert claims if this country has a treaty agreeing to honor those

@danieljmitchell I'd like to see "Laffer-Khaldun Curve" catch on in usage formally, not to be petty towards Mr. Laffer (he agrees), but to introduce more people to Ibn Khaldun

@ryancbriggs it's been good to see that eagerness in poli sci for political scientists to challenge themselves with more rigorous, quantitative approaches; we both gain from talking to each other, and ultimately the state of public knowledge is better off for it

I think this is an outdated take. I haven’t checked, but here is the most recent issue of AJPS (onlinelibrary.wiley.com/toc/15405907/c…). I expect the gap between quant political science in AJPS and top Econ is not in fact night and day.
Richard Hanania@RichardHanania

If you’ve ever read an empirical paper in a top economic journal and compare it to another social science, it’s night and day. Learning about the standards of economics has made me embarrassed of the correlational regression monkey studies I used to read in political science.

Economics: The optimal level of tax evasion, govt waste, crime, and even voter fraud is often *above* zero. (Because getting to literal zero usually requires imposing dramatically higher costs & burdens on everyone else to ensure prevention of those last, few, toughest cases.)
