@oldtownrez @EidynConnect @PLACEEdinburgh Whether above or below an average (distribution?), need to ask whether it’s the right number.
Number of houses is always a tricky one - One per average family size? One per adult? 5 per adult?
When people want to own multiple houses it’s hard to know how many we need.
English

@iammusing @EidynConnect @PLACEEdinburgh Hmm we have way below eueopean averages at 0.7% of properties. It's just been used as a diversion away from the governments lack of investment in housing.

Most residents are keen to show off their community with visitors, but when tourism wants become the priority for local authorities rather than residents' needs, and people get displaced from their community, residents feel that they have to fight back to rebalance their economy.

Nearly 3,000 people rallied against mass tourism in Barcelona. The conversion of many homes to holiday apartments has driven up rents by almost 70 percent.

@EidynConnect @PLACEEdinburgh Also, ran out of characters.. For ‘other business types’ - I know I wouldn’t support business like opticians, butchers, chemist, barber, shoe repair, dentists, hardware, fishmonger, etc. when visiting somewhere. Overtourism can displace residents & business/services they support.
English

@iammusing @PLACEEdinburgh @iammusing You really need to think about this with a bit more intelligence. 40k jobs in Edinburgh alone. About £1.5 billion spending annually. And you say it's a few cleaners and 'host other business types' 🤦♀️
English

@oldtownrez @EidynConnect @PLACEEdinburgh Thanks, generally I think magnificent cities with histories such as Edinburgh would continue to prosper without STLs. I absolutely appreciate that owning an STL business is attractive (more lucrative nightly rate; 3rd party handling bookings and cleaning, no customer meet) etc.
English

@EidynConnect @PLACEEdinburgh I didn’t quantify the cleaners. I used it as an example of an employment type.
In the interest of informed debate could you please provide a source for your numbers. I’ve no doubt that the people staying in AirB&Bs spend thousands - a fair % must be towards second mortgages.
English

@levelsio @daveying99 Generally speaking I find the ‘Build more houses’ suggestion an interesting one. How many do we need? Some people want more than one even if some don’t have one. Always remember that line that you don’t go back seconds until everyone has had a plate.
English

@daveying99 Not tourist fault though
They just visit
Why spray them with water? What did they do?
Build more houses
English

@EidynConnect @PLACEEdinburgh I don’t think it’s as clear cut as that. Sure the nearby AirB&B has contract cleaners.. but it could/should be a home. Similarly, perhaps tourist focussed business types exist in places that could host other business types. I don’t think the alternative is zero commerce. Do you?
English

@PLACEEdinburgh Nearly 40,000 jobs in Edinburgh are employed in tourism and you can double that to include the Lothians. Suggest you find re-employment for these people before campaigning to make them redundant. Think of others. Don't just think of yourself.

@PLACEEdinburgh An AirB&B business owner told me they deliberately waited until the last day to apply to maximise the trading time. The sooner it’s returned to housing stock the better.

If only so many commercial short-term let owners hadn't waited until the last minute to apply for a licence and had already got the planning permission in place before applying, there wouldn't have been a backlog. Important to note that these applicants could still trade.

@thecockburn @projectscot A sad loss of a heritage site in south-west Edinburgh only a stones throw away from the city farm. A loss of diversity. It might not have achieved the margins a big corporation demands but can we really allow a narrow interest group to alter the fabric of this part of the city?
