President Obama is absolutely right to call out the brazen double standards corroding the integrity of American politics. The current crop of Republican leaders, many of whom wrapped themselves in the Constitution when it suited their agenda, are now silent as fundamental democratic norms are shredded in real time. If Obama had dared to revoke press credentials, threaten dissenting law firms with economic punishment, or surveil protesting students, the right-wing media ecosystem would’ve ignited with cries of tyranny and calls for impeachment. But when the same authoritarian tactics are deployed by figures they support, they look the other way or worse, cheer it on. This hypocrisy is not just partisan, it’s dangerous. It signals a disturbing erosion of principle, where the rules no longer apply universally, but only based on who holds power. That’s not democracy. That’s the slow march toward autocracy.
