In 1978, NASA scientist Donald Kessler proposed a scenario many dismissed as sci fi. Today it's more like a forecast. 🛰️
Kessler's Syndrome occurs when space debris hits a satellite, and that collision creates new debris hitting other satellites, causing a self-sustaining chain reaction.
New constellations for Starlink, Blue Origin, Starcloud, and others are announced every week. Congestion in LEO will increase the likelihood for Kessler's syndrome to occur.
For those of us building constellations, debris removal, launch timing, and orbital maneuvering will become a key part of the equation.
The technology to track, avoid and actively clear debris will be critical infrastructure to a long-term orbital economy.
Kessler's Syndrome hasn't occurred yet, but scientists warn we are seeing early stages.
