This is really really massive. They didn't create a better token program that new tokens can use (like Token22), they created a drop-in replacement for the existing one that is 25x more efficient!
Imagine you're running an old Windows 98 Desktop PC and your IT guy comes and upgrades it to Windows 11, swaps out some RAM, new CPU, but your desktop, your apps, your emails, your documents, everything is where it was before, it just works but it's 25x faster.
Every single existing Solana Token (except Token22) benefits from this, immediately and automatically. Tokens power the blockchain, almost every single transaction (except votes) uses tokens.
Insane improvement.

Introducing P-Token: an optimized rewrite of the SPL Token program for Solana, now live on mainnet. Token instructions are about 96% cheaper in compute, freeing 12-13% more block space for the network without altering block limits 🧵

Today's a big one for @solana: p-token goes live on mainnet🌊
It's a ground-up rewrite of the SPL token program that takes over the exact same address.
Which means everything currently using the SPL token program gets cheaper overnight.
🟣~96% compute reduction on token instructions (98% on transfers)
🟣~13% more block space network-wide
🟣new batch instruction for cheaper DeFi composability
🟣wsol unwraps in one instruction instead of three
🟣recover SOL stuck in mint or multisig accounts

Solana people are hungry to win, and the first good product that’s live gets a ton of attention. That’s it. Happened with amms, prop amms, aggregators, lending protocols, schedulers, etc… What’s “good enough”. Who knows when the product surface area is huge, but people trying it and liking it is the basic filter.
