AutoCAD costs $2,030 a year.
SolidWorks costs $4,195 a year just for the standard license.
Someone open sourced a 3D parametric modeler that does most of what both of them do, and you can install it on Windows, Mac, and Linux for $0.
It's called FreeCAD.
Sketch geometry-constrained 2D shapes, extrude them into parametric 3D models, and edit any parameter in the history tree to update the entire design instantly.
Reads and writes STEP, IGES, STL, DXF, OBJ, and IFC out of the box.

@kevin_jordan__ womp womp dude having lived it for the 21 years i’ve existed i learned you gotta to lean into your strengths. yes there 100% will be hurdles but falling into a pit of “woe is me” has no net benefit to your productivity or life whatsoever.

@mattdykema @67Designs @ycombinator @andrewkornuta half the time these founders haven’t stepped foot on the shop floor. a background in manufacturing or at least adjacent is necessary

These plays usually come from folks who don’t understand subtractive manufacturing. CNC isn’t just “make the shape.” where is your workholding, datums, tool access, stock allowance, rigidity, inspection, tolerance stack-up, and knowing what material has to be removed without creating a nightmare's and burnout on the floor
English

Autonomous manufacturing sounds great in a pitch deck until it hits the real shop floor.
CAD-to-part in one day is not the hard part.
The hard part is material certs, fixturing, inspection, tooling, machine availability, revisions, tolerances, operator judgment, and getting a part through quality without babysitting the process.
This space is wildly under-practiced by people who have never had a hot job sitting on a machine at 4 PM with a bad setup sheet and a CMM backlog.

Prototyping.io is building autonomous manufacturing systems to turn CAD designs into high-quality mechanical parts as fast as one day. They’re already saving weeks on hardware iteration cycles for multi-billion dollar companies by delivering high-quality parts, while doing $400k in monthly revenue. Congrats on the launch, @Revanth279 & @ThePreritOberai! ycombinator.com/launches/QFc-p…

@bruce_mcgonigal they don’t understand that to keep these canadians here, massive policy, financial, and infra changes are needed (also our industries lack severely in comparison to the states). you want to keep canadians? show them there’s opportunity here…

The Liberals are pitching the idea of charging Canadian youth $500K if they want to leave Canada to move to the USA. 🙃
Holding Canadian youth hostage is not what a democratic society does.
