Most founders obsess over dashboards and aggregate metrics, but some of the best product insights come from understanding how individual users actually use their product. In this episode of Startup School, YC's @dflieb walks through one of his favorite tools for better understanding your users, the dot plot. It's a simple two-dimensional grid that reveals usage patterns no aggregate chart can show you. He’ll cover why it gives founders a better sense of product health, what patterns to look for, and real-world examples of how dot plots helped teams at Google Photos and PayPal. 00:52 — Why DAUs Lie to You 01:39 — What is a Dot Plot and How Does it Work? 02:50 — Picking the Right Event to Track 03:34 — Reading Patterns in the Dots 05:17 — Tracking User State & Attributes 06:16 — The PayPal Fraud Insight 07:59 — Dot Plot vs. DAU Graph 08:56 — Finding Features That Drive Retention 10:30 — Scaling Dot Plots to Billions of Users 11:13 — The $80K Contract That Churned 11:57 — Common Dot Plot Mistakes 12:41 — Dot Plots + Cohort Curves

A lawyer friend on Legora: "Legora really helped with this latest motion, which was dense with past issues in the case. Now my paralegal says she cannot live without it. It is just too remarkable and timesaving."

A @ycombinator partner (very active on X) asked me for $250k with a guarantee acceptance to their next batch😭 He said you'll raise few millions after batch anyways so 250k will be nothing. What happened to yc😭😭

Ex-NVIDIA engineer who built Unsloth explained RL, kernels, reasoning, quantization, and agents in 2 hours 42 minutes - better than $5000 fine-tuning bootcamps. pick the base model -> write triton kernels for 2x faster fine-tune -> quantize to 4-bit -> run GRPO/DPO -> ship a reasoning model on your single GPU. That loop is why Unsloth is the default way to fine-tune Llama, Qwen, Gemma, and Phi on hardware you already own. Unsloth + Triton kernels + 4-bit quantization + GRPO/DPO + single-GPU fine-tuning - that's the stack. Watch and save it, then fine-tune your first model tonight.

If you're wading in the swamp of churn prevention, it's already too late. The product sucks and you're just trying to move a few percentage points. The faster path to a high retention low churn is actually having a real awesome product. Everything else is a small side effect.

Insforge is what happens when autonomous agents just want to code and not deal with weird APIs and onboarding for cloud servers and services that are made for squishy slow humans
Hang Huang@hanghuang_

We've now launched and served 40,000+ total projects @insforge! A few months ago, we were still struggling to explain what InsForge was. People didn't quite get it at first. But we kept our heads down and focused on making the developer experience as frictionless as possible. I still remember the early days when we would manually watch logs for our first 50 users, hoping their databases wouldn't break. Now, I just scrolled down to the bottom of our landing page and saw this number. Doesn't feel real. So grateful for all of you guys 🫶

We ran hundreds of AI web design builds testing Opus 4.8 vs GPT-5.6 Sol. One model built better-looking pages in half the time, with half the code. It wasn't the one I expected. What I learned about slop, context rot, and why your prompts don't matter as much as your think🧵

One of our biggest engineering problems is that Conductor is Mac only, which means most of our testing is manual and local. So I asked Fable to: - port Conductor to Linux - open the build inside a Conductor Cloud sandbox - use Codex computer use to QA - send me a screen recording of the whole thing And it worked! The dream is that a user can report a bug, and it gets triaged, fixed, and QA'd in the background. We're getting very close!

opencode crossed VS Code in monthly web traffic i don't think people realize how fast opencode is growing right now pretty insane considering they started relatively "late" and with all the issues they had with the old github repo outranking their own website back then respect @thdxr (this was generated on opencode + with the crustdata MCP)

Claude Mythos for Computer Use at 60% the price. Every computer-use agent demos beautifully on clean web apps. Real work lives in legacy desktop software surprise pop-ups, modals that steal focus, menus from 2003. We built the one that survives it.

The new AI-native design process: > record all planning meetings for context > give agent sample inspiration images > create dozens of live prototypes instantly, then explore/combine/edit the best ideas > create one-off mini-tools to tweak in realtime > update design.md > ship it
Y Combinator@ycombinator

AI isn't just changing the tools designers use. It's changing the way they think, prototype, and build. In this episode of Design Review, YC Head of Design @eve_bouff joins @aaron_epstein to share the AI-first workflow she uses to design products, websites, and events. Using projects like Paxel, @sotazine, and YC Startup School as examples, she explains how coding agents are transforming everything from rapid prototyping and branding to design systems, and why the biggest bottleneck is no longer software. It's imagination. 00:00 - Eve's AI-First Design Workflow 01:27 - Why She Designs With Her Voice 03:44 - Paxel: Spotify Wrapped for Coding Sessions 07:13 - Building Tools for Yourself 11:01 - Turning Coding Transcripts Into Feedback 12:53 - The Story Behind SOTA Zine 16:57 - Designing With Context, Not Prompts 21:07 - How to Get Better AI Design Outputs 23:20 - Building an Interactive Map of San Francisco 25:17 - Behind Startup School's Visual Identity 29:59 - The Future of Design
