Be careful not to misunderstand the hundreds of school shootings reported by various databases. Almost 90% of these incidents are AT school, not IN school, that is, on school grounds. Many occur at night, on weekends, during summer, and do not involve students. Many do not involve any injuries, and few result in student fatalities. From 2010 through 2023, 94 students were fatally shot inside K-12 schools by an assailant, and 64 of them were from the four extreme cases: Sandy Hook, Parkland, Santa Fe, and Uvalde.

Combination of celebratory gatherings of large numbers, heat, alcohol, and should an argument break out and someone has a concealed firearm, many can get injured or killed. And in some cases, a crowd just gives an armed person an opportunity for mayhem. We know that mass shootings often happen at parties, including birthday parties. Well, July 4 into July 5 has lots of them.

In Sydney, Australia, where private ownership of firearm is severely restricted, a man fatally stabbed six and wounded several others in a shopping mall. Had this been in the U.S where guns are far too easy to acquire, the death toll would likely have been greater. #guncontrol
