I’ve been blessed with a lot of luck over the years. An example of that was being able to convince this guy, Jaryd Krishnan, to join me as Harvest Profit’s first hire. He’s a rockstar programmer but he’s also an amazing energetic and optimistic person in general. He’s going to be participating in an AIonYourFarm.com course to give you some actionable tips on what you should do to build tools that would be easy to hand off to a professional developer, if you want to go that route. AI coding tools are amazing but they can make a lot of slop if you don’t give them some simple guardrails. @steeke7 It wasn’t perfect by any means though. I ran across a few bugs that it couldn’t fix (even though it tries hard!). I had lunch with @jarydkrish and his human brain found some broken code that the AI didn’t realize was broken

Here is what I built: PinMap A mapping app with custom icons and colors. I want to add in weather station data, asset tags on things I own, and security/game camera feeds. I’m sure something like this exists but that’s OK. It was a fun few hours!

Harvest Profit’s first employee Jaryd Krishnan (@jarydkrish) receiving a big regional award this evening for his contributions to the local tech community. He’s mentored all 15 cohorts of the Emerging Digital Academy code school. He’s a talented software engineer but maybe even more talented at working with people. He’s an optimistic extrovert with a magnetic personality. I’m thankful for everything he’s done for Harvest Profit’s customers and me personally. I’m lucky to have been able to convince him to join me!

I recorded a podcast yesterday. I asked the host (a HarvestProfit.com user) what his favorite feature of the software is. His reply: our customer support team. I started doing all customer support but I do well under 1% of it now. So I can’t take much credit! Good work @theWyguy95, @blonglet, @thechrissalazar, @jarydkrish, @remotejake, Claudine, Cody, and Jarrett!

Things I didn’t know I needed until just now. Where does one acquire one of these?

Today marks the three-year anniversary of HarvestProfit.com’s acquisition by John Deere. A few thoughts. First, I’m thankful for a lot of things, but I’m especially thankful that we have been able to maintain a lot of autonomy. We continue to improve what features we currently have, build new features, and provide the best support that we can. What we work on continues to be driven solely by our team and customers. Secondly, I knew Deere had a lot of smart and motivated people. But the people have exceeded my expectations. There are a ton of great people at the company who’ve helped us build better software for our customers. That will only accelerate. Lastly, it’s been fun to see the progress on Operations Center. I’m excited to continue to leverage the great work by the Operations Center teams and add a financial lens to the increasing amount of data being tracked on your farm. I received a fair amount of critical feedback after the deal closed. And that’s understandable. But I’m confident that we’ve been able to build a better customer experience by our closer relationship with Deere’s people and tech. I have a lot to be thankful for.

One of the things that I’m proud of at Harvest Profit is that we haven’t had any employees quit since I started the business 7 years ago. This will obviously change at some point as people seek new challenges. But I’m thankful to have kept our small team together. I’m far from perfect as a manager but I think that there are a few factors at play here: 1) Working on impactful things for our customers 2) Deere has been great to us and has a ton of smart, motivated people 3) Everyone has a lot of autonomy 4) Flexible work hours and location 5) Problems happen and when they do, no one gets angry. We do our best to fix issues and improve. And there’s likely some luck involved. I’ll take it though!
