@duncanstives Yes. Bleed resistors, etc. are a good design choice, but the charge needs somewhere to go. If the AC and DC are unplugged and all you have is a box with charged caps, there's nowhere for that energy to go. Nothing is going to solve that problem. At least, no practical solution.

Filter caps are *supposed* to have bleeder resistors. I did have an old benchtop supply that made the "interesting" design choice to handle energy stored in capacitors by simply shorting the output when powered off. The output literally went to an additional set of poles on the power switch and when you turned it off the positive and negative were just connected together. With only a 3a max output it didn't really create a problem until some fool (me) was using it to charge a 12v battery and, when it was done, just turned it off. Bad idea 😬

Just a friendly reminder... If an unplugged power supply has enough energy to light a light bulb, the capacitors definitely hold enough of a charge to kill you.

@Jin95127613 FYI: Over 400V. Bus voltage is determined by the design, not just VRMS x √2. In this example it is just under 420V.

@Romulaten No, they didn't. The bleed circuit will want to send the energy to ground (without energizing the housing). This meets IEC 62368-1. The unit is unplugged. Therefore no Earth ground.

@jonnygerow The manufacturer saved $0.10 on the discharge resistor. International safety standards like IEC 62368-1 strictly require device voltage to drop to a safe level, usually under 60V, within 1 to 2 seconds of disconnection.

@amhayes8 @AttonMathews I know. When I mentioned moisture on skin, it was not in relation to skin capacitance. It was in reference to the increased conductivity of the surface of the human body. It's a shame the same word has to be used for both purposes, but that was my intent.

@AttonMathews @jonnygerow Skin capacitance is a property of wires carrying AC, not humans. While frequency does play a role in electrocution hazards that's only at Mhz frequencies, not at 0Hz. The PFC bulk cap is charged at 400V+, if you present it with a discharge path through your heart it IS lethal.

@alchemistocrat I was lucky enough to be in very dry conditions and was simply thrown back 10 feet. If I had been in my workshop in Florida, I'm sure I'd be dead. That was a long time ago. Fortunately, it only takes once to learn who's boss when f-ing around inside live circuits.

@unikoshardware What they've found is that by placing the conductive material at the distance from the connector where they did, they effectively doubled the capacity of each conductor. But only for that distance of wire between the terminal and the "Equalizer" cable comb.

@unikoshardware Yep! Nothing special about their terminals or connector. They're still the same 8.5A rated stuff everyone else uses. The reason Asus says each conductor or terminal or whatever they say supports 17A is not because it ACTUALLY supports 17A each from a mechancal standpoint.
