Very often, and without even trying, I find myself on the wrong side of history.

@greg_price11 @ChuckRossDC The allegation about Hill beating his child was proven false. Having said that, he’s far from a great father and role model but he still deserves to be considered innocent of that accusation.

There’s currently a petition on change.org calling for the Chiefs to release Harrison Butker for his commencement speech. You think of all the horrible things current NFL players have done — Tyreek Hill beating his kids, DeShaun Watson, the various deadbeat Dads. But it’s the Catholic guy telling women that families are more important than careers where people draw the line

@FrPBehm One thing to consider is that 47% of the workforce is female. If even half of those women stayed home then the supply of labor would go down, making the price go up. Higher wages make it easier for a one income family to make it work.

In an ideal world, yes, we could support a family on one income. In the real world, that usually isn't possible. Part of Catholic Social Teaching regarding just wages is ideally being able to support a family on one wage. The Butkers can do that. Most people can't.

Regarding the @buttkicker7 speech, I really like the parts I've heard (haven't listened to the whole thing). But, one thing that I think is worth noting...Mr. Butker is on a five year contract with the Chiefs worth $20.275 million with $9.1 million guaranteed.

@mattrosestl @BSarver35 It’s going to be a breakout year for Iowa. Looking at 17 points per game. Mike Leach will be smiling from above.

@emzanotti Makes sense. I’m not sure he was saying that there is only one appropriate vocation for women but I could be wrong. I have followed you for a bit and respect you, what did he say that made you think he was saying that thing? (Also, did you listen to his whole speech?)

If it’s a vocation, it’s not simply a job. It is a calling from God. Your *job* may or may not be your *vocation.* The problem comes in assuming that there is only one appropriate vocation for women. There is not. Many women cannot be mothers. As women, we are called to use our feminine genius in our vocation, whatever that may be.

When telling women to lean into their vocations, it’s imperative that you recognize that women can bring maternal genius to *lots of different vocations* and that a vocation is an edict from God. We are not all the same, nor are we all called to the same vocation.
McClarey@McClarey2

@emzanotti He didn't tell women to get back in the kitchen. That is a canard. the-american-catholic.com/2024/05/15/tho…

@Matt_kelty11 @mollypriddy Trust me, as a Dad to girls I am well aware it is not always about me. I’ve watched way more RomComs than I would have if I had boys.

@Matt_kelty11 @mollypriddy All good man. I didn’t grow up Catholic or thinking these things for the majority of my life so I saw things via your lens for 30+ years. I take no offense, especially on this app. Hope you have a great day.

@Matt_kelty11 @mollypriddy I understand we view things differently and have tried to articulate things as well as I could. I also understand that my views are not mainstream and accept that people will vehemently disagree. Most Dad’s make a lot of choices that make their kids unhappy. I’m no different.

@lancemb1 @mollypriddy So you would have chose to spread the “ word” and your message rather than what would make your daughter happy and possibly the other students. And it most certaintly takes away. Its their day not yours, not his, not gods, not anyone but theirs. Thats a hell of a stance for a dad

@Matt_kelty11 @mollypriddy Well, I would not characterize it as “just” being a homemaker. I would say it would be best for children to be raised at home but understand that is not always possible. Our kids went to daycare, so I’m not dogmatic about it.

@lancemb1 @mollypriddy That is fair. So your daughters had a choice of what they wanted and what made them happy and also got to persue a degree to better there chance at a career correct? Are you yelling your daughters they should give up their careers they worked hard for to just be a “homemaker”

@Matt_kelty11 @mollypriddy By the way, those are good questions. Appreciate you asking and it seems to be in good faith. If you want to go in deeper I can respond to DM’s. (I realize that sounds kind of creepy but it is just better to not be restricted to 280 characters).

@Matt_kelty11 @mollypriddy 2/2. It would not have bothered me but I don’t think that takes away from her accomplishment. She still got the degree, whether or not her life is directed to that career or motherhood is another thing. FWIW, she talks about leaving her job once she has kids.

@KcRunner351 @lancemb1 @KC_Goddess29 I’ll admit I don’t know the full makeup of that college but will assume at least half (probably a bit more) are practicing Catholics. Not all of them will align with that exact way of thinking, but some will for sure. The faculty/staff are most likely to align with that.

My hot take: anyone who is shocked by the Butker “news” must have had their head in the sand the past several years. He’s been very open about this stuff. Maybe the dynasty factor has more eyes on it now, but Chiefs fans shouldn’t be surprised here.

@Matt_kelty11 @mollypriddy Benedictine is known for being an orthodox Catholic college so that speech would not have been shocking. On visit days the BC President tells every potential student group, “You don’t have to be Catholic to go here, but understand that we are”. It is no secret.

@Matt_kelty11 @mollypriddy 2/2 secular or non-Catholic institutions. For example, one of my daughters went to Benedictine, the other to Missouri Science and Technology. It was based on fit and degree programs offered.

@Matt_kelty11 @mollypriddy 1/2 His story involves growing in his faith, he was lukewarm about it going into college and became more serious about it as he got older. Catholics aren’t obligated to only attend Catholic colleges. There can be a variety of prudential reasons to attend

@emzanotti OK, maybe o misunderstand Catholic teaching. Is having a career equal to motherhood? (Not asking to be an ass, I truly don’t know). Also, if you have any good resources for me I would gladly read those.

@aguirreryan @CousinsMuse It’s helpful to know the difference between Mosaic law, which Jesus abrogated, and moral law, which he did not. Leviticus also talks about stealing, should we abandon that teaching?
