People should not be afraid of their governments; the government should be afraid of their people.

Riddle me this, @RoKhanna. If closing USAID could cause so many child deaths in Africa, why would the African Union's top diplomat in DC celebrate USAID's shutdown? Does she like dead babies? Is she ignorant? How else do you explain her arriving at the same conclusion as DOGE?

This is the real reason they’re mad at Elon Musk and DOGE for shutting down USAID.

All DOGE required was contact information of the recipients to confirm that funding was not fraudulent. No validated medical funding was stopped. Anything that appeared to be legitimate lifesaving funding continued and is now administered by the State Department. If anyone had actually died as a result of DOGE, their names would be worldwide headline news! On the other hand, USAID did help fund the Wuhan Virology Institute, which caused the deaths of millions, and the revolution that started the Russia-Ukraine war.
Pirate Wires@PirateWires

Saturday, Silicon Valley Congressman Ro Khanna sat down with left-wing podcaster Jennifer Welch — who previously cheered on those celebrating the murder of Charlie Kirk — to discuss the future of “progressive” governance. In a now viral clip, Khanna claimed Elon Musk “possibly sentenced to death” 4.5 million children by dismantling USAID, and demanded he be subpoenaed once Democrats retake power. The number traces back to a Lancet study published last summer projecting 14 million deaths by 2030 from USAID cuts. But the study assumes a fake world: one where DOGE’s cuts stay frozen through 2030, where the State Department’s lifesaving waiver doesn’t exist (it does), where Congress never refunds AIDS relief (it did), where two decades of clinics and supply chains vanish the second a grant lapses. It also conveniently ignores some former USAID functions (like funding gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology). Meanwhile, NYU statistician Aaron Brown notes the study credits USAID with preventing 11 million more deaths than the entire global mortality decline over two decades. @planetmaxwell interrogates the claim that Elon and DOGE single-handedly killed millions of children, and explains why Silicon Valley’s congressman is now laundering this as settled fact (when it’s really just propaganda). I know this will come across as insensitive, but we need a real conversation about front line female police officers / infanteers. She shot a civilian and then ran away when the gunman came at her. She abandoned her injured partner. This is similar to what happened with female officers at the Bondi Beach massacre. Everyone has a fight or flight, but can we at least inquire as to whether women are more prone to flight? Because if so, it’s exceptionally dangerous to civilians and other officers.

@manyapan 在中国球迷眼里,荷兰队一直是"全攻全守"打法的代表,克鲁伊夫时代就有"无冕之王"的称号。 希望有一天荷兰队可以真正加冕,世界足坛需要新的世界冠军。

It's not often that I get to feel a sense of national pride while explaining China's No. 1 trending topic 😂. Right now, it's "The Dutch are killing it." The hashtag #荷兰队杀疯了 (Hélán duì shā fēng le) essentially means "The Netherlands is on fire" or "The Dutch team is unstoppable," and started trending after the Dutch team's 5–1 win over Sweden, with many Chinese netizens cheering them on. 🧡⚽️ #NEDSWE

@joeykatzen @cosmorxn The entire economy is oriented on balancing distance from black people with proximity to job centers. We have great freight rail and road infrastructure. We have great little town centers with the right demographics.

I’m seeing this sentiment quite a bit, but I think it fundamentally misunderstands how people perceive wealth in the 21st century. Much of America’s wealth is effectively invisible. The country can lose billions through waste, inefficiency, or corruption and barely notice the impact (the Somali Minnesota daycare scandal is one example). Wealth is reflected less in visible infrastructure and more in things like high salaries, retirement security, and access to the world’s most advanced healthcare. Football fans aren’t necessarily going to be impressed by those things because they are difficult to see. Most Europeans have little idea how wealthy Americans actually are. Walking around New York, for example, they are likely to see cities that feel familiar in many ways: older buildings, historic neighbourhoods, and dense urban environments similar to European ones, albeit with more skyscrapers. Even the huge stadiums, while visually impressive, may strike some visitors as more extravagant than evidence of everyday prosperity. They are also going to use subways full of graffiti, crazy people, rats, and fare dodgers. A useful comparison is China. Someone visiting a Chinese city might come away thinking China is exceptionally wealthy because of its infrastructure: the modern airports, high-speed rail, and newly built urban areas (pictured). But they would be drawing conclusions from what is most visible rather than from the underlying reality. China remains significantly poorer than the United States on a per capita basis. In both cases, the average person is misled by what they see.

USA is a shameless host. It‘s 11am in Seattle and ~4am in Australia. They could have easily put the game 10 hours later, prime time in the US and also great for Aussies. Instead they put the game 9pm European prime time because they want our validation. Main character syndrome
