I am nailing Nine Theses to the door of @Wikipedia. This has been my project for the last nine months. There has never been a thoroughgoing Wikipedia reform proposal—this is the first. If it doesn't work, we need to organize an alternative. 🧵

@lsanger I took that class spring quarter of 1983, which I'm sure is well before your time. There was a computer lab in Independence Hall that was part of the class, IIRC.

@lsanger "Mass apathy." Old joke punchline: 'I don't know and I don't care.'

To know how the world really works, everybody ought to know more about blackmail of the powerful, secret societies, and ______________. Fill in the blank. What is the most important third item of this type?

@VI_Hillbilly I think the worst evil is not "banal" in Arendt's sense. It is extremely dark, twisted, and dysfunctional except when performing in front of normal people.

@MuxInNod @lsanger Larry, I have to be laser-focused on the nation where God—Father, Son, and Holy Ghost—has placed me, the USA. Americans have lost a shared epistemology, a shared theory of knowledge!!! THAT is the key. Some call it a loss of critical thinking skills. Yes, but epistemology is key.

@lsanger honestly idk why they were even paying anthropic for giving them sonnet 3.5 (at least that's what i heard). sonnet 3.5 is an ancient non reasoning model and military would be way better off just running opensource chinese models

I am of two minds: 1. It’s sad that this is now what artists have to do to get their work seen 2. What a brilliant, creative, and joyful piece of content this artist created that also got his painting seen

That's not why Hegseth classified Anthropic as a "supply chain risk." It was because Anthropic refused to let Claude be used for mass surveillance of U.S. citizens, and because they didn't want it to be used in autonomous lethal weapons systems. The first is very understandable (that's illegal, after all), but the second, as you point out, is very dodgy (and probably *should* be illegal).

@lsanger I would classify any AI system which is unable to value human life equally as a national security risk.

(2) But the Pentagon apparently disagreed (?!), maintaining that "a private company shouldn’t dictate how the military uses technology." So, what...the DoD *wants* to use Claude for mass surveillance of U.S. citizens? And insists on being able to do so?!

@Deckard20191 Yep It's really outrageous what they've done to the Columbus Metropolitan Library. It used to be huge. The people responsible for this really need to go. New management and policy is called for.

@lsanger And use of the free internet, DVD and CD offerings all count as legitimate library usage for the purpose of funding. Meeting rooms, special private study areas, etc. Free wi-fi. Now contrast the actual sq. footage of floor space that's devoted to books and periodicals.
