#PT582 #RP In women, advancing age, history of fracture and number of pregnancies are significant risk factors for OA. Interestingly, because of the increased loading, a high BMI is actually protective against low bone mineral density in women. bit.ly/2L7BZYr

@BarnetteKailey #PT582 #KB I would incorporate set-ups to plyos prior to 6 month but may save the actual jumping to when the patient has strength to tolerate the higher impact. I do not think that I would use plyos with a patient who is sedentary because there is a risk of the joint wearing out.

#PT582 #KB If a patient was active in high impact sports before surgery they are more likely to be able to return to these activities post-op. Extensive lower extremity rehab is required for 6 months before starting to incorporate high impact activities. bit.ly/2LfM9SR

#PT582 #AK Mirror therapy may be beneficial for motor function recovery and reduce pain in patients with stroke or CRPS type1. The MOA is not very clear, but may be slightly different depending on whether the goal is motor function or pain control. bit.ly/2KSRB1P

#PT #AB By scheduling and seeing these patients at the end of the day they may be in more of a fatigue state just from participating in ADL's. Also, low impact aerobic exercise may lead to fatigue without exacerbation. bit.ly/2Acr5Kq

#PT582 #KC This study looked at spinal stabilization and gait in patients with LE amputations. Patients completed exercises with their prostheses and included many of the same exercises and progressions we learned in class. bit.ly/2z7Uztx

@t_n_o_6 #PT582 I agree! Think it could be a great option for patients who have a fear or falling or may respond well to doing exercises post op in a warm water environment.

@madeleinetalk Wow! Great thinking with looking into the early phases of healing post-op and participating in aquatic. That is great to know that aquatics is just as effective as land therapy, another tool we can add to our repertoire! #PT582

#PT582 #TO This meta-analysis found there was no increased risk of wound related adverse events in patients who participated in aquatic therapy less than three month after orthopedic surgery. Aquatic therapy may be a safe option early in therapy. bit.ly/2IAWKFM

#PT582 #JH According to research, gait can be improved in people with Parkinson's through visual and or auditory cues. Cuing may supply an external focus or rhythm and activate the cerebellar visual-motor pathway bypassing the basal ganglia. bit.ly/2Mri56A

#PT582 #KT Mediation apps may be a great way to have patients participate in guided practice at home. The app Aware has fully guided Body Scan Mediation aimed at bringing attention to different body parts, deep breathing and the source of pain. bit.ly/2ywHD0f

@GauchoSilver @NAUPT582 #PT582 Do you know how long the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation lasted verses the effects of taping? Both these interventions seem to have very short effect times and seems like neither is a long term solution.

@SavannahG_SPT #PT582 I agree! I think that anything we can give our patients to increase functional use of the arm that they can use daily is going to lead to major gains in the future!

@madeleinetalk I think it could be beneficial for both! I definitely think it would be beneficial for Rx sessions to allow for more ROM to exercise in but if the pts caretaker or family can effectively apply tape it is an easy thing to use and if it helps the patient why not use it everyday.

#PT582 #MT This article's taping method seems to be the same as the McConnell taping method and they saw a significant dec in pain, inc. shoulder flexion + proximal arm function. This method seems to be helpful in reducing pain from a shoulder subluxation. bit.ly/2LOOsMu

@AlfredoSayeg #PT582 That is interesting that the article found that only KT tape decreased pain. If the reduction in pain was due to proprioceptive input I would think that both methods would lead to decreased pain. What do you think lead to this discrepancy?

#PT582 #MT there is not a lot of research comparing taping to other methods of treatment for shoulder subluxation, but I did find an article that cited Mconnel vs KT tape had the same had no effect on shoulder abduction. Although KT did decrease pain.

@kegbert65 @NAUPT582 #PT582 Great insights Kasey! Looking at the results section it looks like the California Tri-pull method is very similar to the McConnell method but a bit more complicated. It would be interesting to see if one method had better outcomes over the other.

@PJThompson93 #PT582 What other treatments do you think would complement the use of the sling? Seems like this sling may be a great long-term solution to reduce pain and total amount of subluxation.

@madeleinetalk #PT582 #MT Yes, contractures are something to be aware of. The article said that it is especially important that a PT help fit it to the patient to ensure a good fit and avoid a sling that would create a postural issue. I believe it would be used in conjunction with other Tx.

#PT582 #MT Post CVA shoulder sling may be an easier and more efficient alternative to shoulder taping. NMES may be another viable option to activate the muscles holding the shoulder in place. bit.ly/2LPN6Rq
