Modi responded on X roughly 40 minutes later, thanking Trump for the tariff reduction but pointedly avoiding the term “trade deal” and declining to confirm any of the terms Trump claimed. Several days later, the White House released a so-called “Joint Statement” at 5:00 AM IST on February 7, when New Delhi was asleep — in a significant breach of diplomatic protocol. By dictating the timing, terminology and key elements — most notably New Delhi’s massive $500 billion purchase pledge and its purported commitment to halt all Russian oil purchases — the U.S. positioned India as a subordinate actor whose trade status hinges on American approval rather than mutual strategic equality. An hour after releasing the “Joint Statement,” the White House unveiled the most coercive element of the arrangement: the “snapback” mechanism codified in a presidential executive order. By lifting the 25% “Russian oil penalty” only on the condition that India cease all direct and indirect imports from Russia, Washington has effectively weaponized trade to constrain Indian foreign policy. While the Indian government has rightly framed the tariff reduction as an economic win, the deal institutionalizes a permanent state of vulnerability. The U.S. retains a “Monitoring Mandate” to police Indian compliance, while India faces the immediate re-imposition of punishing 50% duties if it seeks to assert strategic autonomy. In effect, what is presented as a trade partnership functions instead as a conditional arrangement in which India’s economic stability and energy security are tied to its obedience to Washington’s geopolitical priorities.
