Chunga mostly played Division 2 football for a small club Eendracht Aalst in Belgium (smaller than Dynamos by support base), which was in and out of the top league, while Khumalo was at Emstedden 05, a regional Division 1 or third-tier side; a far-cry from the English Premier League where the best play. This became a long, rumbling debate, familiar among Zimbabweans. Chunga is considered one of the best Zimbabwean players in history, but not at the same level as Grobbelaar and Ndlovu. Grobbelaar, who is South African-born but a Zimbabwean citizen, is the most successful local footballer in Europe; the best goalkeeper Africa ever produced. Grobbelaar is a decorated former Liverpool goalkeeper who won 18 major trophies during his 13-year stay at Anfield (1981–1994). His honours include six League titles, one European Cup (1984), three FA Cups, three League Cups, and five Charity Shields. He was the first African to win the European Cup, just as Ndlovu was the first African to play in the English Premier League. Dzamara was a great guy who liked political and social debates; an active citizen who wanted to make a change not just for himself but for the common good. We would chat at work and even during weekends at my home in Chadcombe where he used to visit, sometimes with his then small kids Nenyasha and Nokutenda. We were good friends, although we were different characters. A passionate sports fan, Dzamara loved football so much, particularly his teams Caps United and Manchester United, and that even brought us closer together. No wonder one of his best friends who used to visit him at our Zimbabwe Independent newsroom was former AmaZulu, Caps United and national team coach Charles Mhaluri. They were close. He had some influence on him. One day after Mhlauri had just been appointed Zimbabwe national football team coach in September 2004, he visited Dzamara at the Independent newsroom at N0.1 Union Avenue, Harare; just opposite to the Zanu PF headquarters, across Rotten Row, to get his opinion on who should be his assistant. I gatecrashed the meeting at the corner of the newsroom to join a good chat. For i also love football, although i support Highlanders, Orlando Pirates and Real Madrid, different teams from Dzamara's even if he had some sympathy for Los Blancos. Mhlauri wanted the late Willard Khumalo to be his assistant on football grounds, but was reluctant to make the call because he wanted media support, hence his tactical manoeuvre was to bring in Moses Chunga, a Dynamos club legend who was popular with Harare journalists, particularly those at The Herald. The debate was who would bring more into the coaching and technical team, Chunga or Khumalo, a legendary figure at Highlanders during his heyday. I was not talking, mostly listening. Chunga and Khumalo, whom I used to drink with at Oasis Hotel from time to time, were probably the most famous figures at Dynamos and Highlanders after Independence in 1980. They were also very popular at Emthonjeni (drinking hole), as we used to call Oasis bar then with its major patrons fronted by the late Chemist Siziba, one of the cellular telephony pioneers in Zimbabwe. The bar will never be the same without him. In fact, it virtually died with him. Mhlauri and Dzamara were in agreement that although Chunga was more talented than Khumalo during their playing days, the difference was that the later had more experience in the acclaimed Dream Team, widely considered Zimbabwe's best national team ever, and team leadership skills as Highlanders captain for a long time. Chunga did not play much for the Dream Team due to his issues with Reinhard Fabisch and injury. He captained Zimbabwe on a few occasions, but not Dynamos. Chunga wore the captain's armband at Eendracht Aalst in Belgium. He had also coached Dynamos in early 2000s and that counted in his favour. But there was also the issue of personality, work ethic and teamwork, which Mhlauri and Dzamara concluded favoured Khumalo. So it was agreed Khumalo would be the assistant to Mhlauri. Deal done. However, to Dzamara’s shock Chunga was announced the following day as the assistant coach. Dzamara lost it. He called his friend and protested strongly, accusing him of pandering to the whims of The Herald and Robson Sharuko & Company at the paper’s sports desk. I had concluded Mhlauri would take Chunga for strategic reasons. At that time, we did not have a good relationship with Herald guys due to political polarisation and toxic debates like which was a better league, the Zimbabwean one or South African one.
