My friends in America, in Japan, expressing patriotism is met with shunning. For example, if I put a Japanese flag sticker on my car, police officers will stop me for questioning. I only display the flag at my front door on Japanese holidays. Almost no one displays the flag at their home on weekdays. This is due to the past excessive claims made by the Japanese right wing, but don't you think it's natural to show patriotism to the country you were born in?

I made sure to learn about all the customs and what was expected behavior before I visited Japan. I learned as many Japanese phrases as I could, and used Google Translate when I needed to. I made sure to never be disruptive (unless singing loudly at a karaoke) and I was met by a very kind people. I made sure to eat all the sushi “as is” when it was given to me by the chefs 😂

Yes! I've been babbling to my husband about the same thing! For generations we're told that everything about us, our culture, traditions, family structures, OUR MEN, and our history are shameful. That all the world holds us in contempt for just being us. Then, one miraculous day, the veil falls down. And there you are! And here I am. And we speak. We clearly communicate! And we compare notes. Within two days, all the lies are revealed. We actually love and respect each other deeply! For seventy five years, we've been manipulated, isolated, and shamed for being ourselves. Last night I saw the first ripple of true anger for what's been done to both of us. Since we were just young children ALL of us have been emotionally abused. I've been hearing how much the French look down on us all my life. It's fostered a deep dislike for the French. How can you not hate those who hate you for no reason? If the French turn out to be regular people, then my whole life is a lie.

In Japan, since the samurai era, there has been a spirit of accepting defeat with dignity. However, this is only true if the other party respects our pride. Resentment doesn't disappear easily. But America, at least, didn't take away our symbols or oppress us; they respected us.
