The Indian Scientist who contributed to Russia’s win against Nazis in World War II . This is the Story of an Indian Scientist Dr. Kolachala Seeta Ramayya who was born on July 15, 1899 in Vuyyuru Village, Krishna Dt., Andhra Pradesh. Dr. Kolachala Seeta Ramayya (1899–1944) was a pioneering Indian biochemist and petroleum scientist, often hailed as the "Father of Chematology" (now known as Tribology—the science of friction, lubrication, and wear). He became a critical scientific figure in the Soviet Union during World War II, where his inventions played a decisive role in the survival of Soviet armored divisions. 01. Education in India: Completed his graduation in Chemistry in India before moving to the United States for higher studies. 02. Higher Studies in the USA : Earned his MS in Chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1924. His thesis was titled "Paths of Atoms." Enrolled in a PhD program at Cornell University (1925–26) but left before completion to join the industry. 03. Professional Career and Innovations : Dr. Ramayya’s career is unique for its trajectory across two superpowers :The USA and the USSR. (A) American Phase: The Patent King : He joined L. Sonneborn Sons Inc., a petrochemical company in New York. The company was so impressed by his talent that they built a dedicated laboratory for him. Key Achievement: He formulated advanced additives for lubricants that significantly extended engine life. Patents: He secured three US patents for his chemical formulations during this period. (B) Soviet Phase: Journey in Moscow In 1930, responding to an invitation from the Soviet Union to help build their fledgling petrochemical industry, he moved to Moscow. 04. Leadership : He was appointed head of the lubricants research division at the Petrochemical Institute and later the Department of Fuels and Oils at the Institution of Automobile Motors Research (NAMI). 05. WWII Contribution : His most legendary achievement was developing a specialized kerosene-based fuel and lubricant that allowed Soviet battle tanks (like the T-34) to operate in sub-zero temperatures. This was a turning point in the tank battles against the German army, whose vehicles often froze in the Russian winter. 06. Chematology : He published over 70 scientific papers, which laid the groundwork for "Chematology"— a term he coined for the chemistry of motors. 07. Major Achievements & Legacy Doctorate: He eventually earned his Doctorate for his seminal book, "Viscosity Anomaly in Oil and its Effects on Friction in Machines." DK-NAMI: He helped develop the DK-NAMI equipment, a standard tool used to determine the characteristics of engine oils. Posthumous Work: His final scientific paper, "Induction Period of Precipitation—a New Index of Motor Oil Quality," was published after his death in 1944. Global Recognition: Despite being relatively unknown in his home country for decades, he is revered in Russia and among global Tribologists for bridging the gap between chemistry and mechanical engineering.
