@junglejim_69420 @eruhammy That said, the guy has addressed the whole thing honorably and I agree he should be left alone by now. Different story for his racist defenders distorting the other valid points raised by filipinos and resorting to racist remarks.

@mimpuds @eruhammy considering that i knew the difference between “develop” and “invent” from the start, i don’t feel threatened. does cultural appropriation of foreign cuisine happen? yes. is this guy perpetuating that? no. aim for a target instead of into the audience, you may find a bullseye.

i legitimately cant stop reading tweets about the whole ube ice cream drama. 'drama.' 'he shouldn't say he invented it' he didn't 'he should give credit to SEA ppl' it's for AAPI month 'sorbetes is already vegan' it isnt sorbetes 'this doesn't help filipino farmers' ????

@junglejim_69420 @eruhammy Here we go again inventing constraints no one actually asked for. No one demanded a full cultural breakdown in one tweet, a short nod of acknowledgement was all that’s asked and he was fine making follow-up tweets so why do you pressure people to fit everything in one tweet lmao

@junglejim_69420 @eruhammy Your strawman looks cute. You did a great job shrinking a pretty layered sentiment into something small enough for your mental faculties to digest.

@mimpuds @eruhammy you mean how a random guy on a personal account used an industry term to describe the process of modifying a food concept for a commercial kitchen, and thousands of people harassed him for claiming to invent a dessert? i agree!

@eruhammy @junglejim_69420 I kinda love this thing where you paraphrase people’s words, distort them in ways so the end result sound completely ridiculous and proceed to tear apart the stupefied version. Really a genius way to make something easy to dismiss. What kind of fallacy do we call this?

@junglejim_69420 I saw a bunch of them eventually devolve into saying 'this is about how you people treat us filipinos, talking down to us and treating us like we're morons!!!' Like girl don't bring your whole country down with you, I'm sure your neighbors are fine, it's YOU that's dumb

@marblescorpion @_ahbibis_ On 2nd thought tho I gues you are right that there maybe wasn't a sufficient acknowledgment of the error in interpretation tho I see some filipino accounts come to this realization and explain it to others, which hopefully leads to more understanding and nuance around the issue.

@angelongonyama Bro this is so off the mark, like the total opposite of what’s going on. Filipinos have enjoyed international recognition and are actually loud and proud whenever anything filipino is recognized internationally. The backlash here is happening precisely because no recognition was

Maybe we Filipinos are just not accustomed to having our own culture getting international recognition that when foreigners partake in it we immediately react as if they are stealing. But food and culture are meant to be shared like how others shared theirs to us.

@sarahlol1863603 @OVTweetmarck which is exactly why that kind of anecdotal framing is shortsighted. It just shows how limited that perspective is when you can’t look beyond your immediate radius.

@sarahlol1863603 @OVTweetmarck It’s totally not just ice cream, you guys are obstinately choosing to be blind like youre just so used to oversimplifying things. And why bring up old people as if that’s a meaningful measure when a lot of cultural and economic dynamics don’t show up in someone’s immediate circle

@TheVoiceofSpri1 Except he didn’t figure it out half a world a way, he literally worked with filipino chefs to make his flavor possible but didnt think it was worth acknowledging.

all these reactions just show how deeply close minded Filipinos really are. One guy figure something out half a world away and they immediately pull the gentrification or colonizer card

I don’t understand the hate towards the white dude making sorbetes. Sorbetes isn’t even a precolonial Philippine concept. it’s literally a Spanish dessert, we copied a version that only fits in our accessible ingredients even the ube variety is fairly recent invention

@hvsperus @_ahbibis_ Nope broad mention of a community consisting to diverse ethnicities and is not crediting filipino culture because ‘filipino culture’ is independent of AAPI label. 2. Who knows? But acting like personal Twitter statements are irrelevant is denial of how much of public discussions

@sarahlol1863603 @OVTweetmarck That’s the thing with you lot you see ice cream involved and reduce the whole discussion to “it’s just ice cream,” when the conversation is obviously about cultural attribution and acknowledgment. You have no grasp of the broader context people are actually talking about. Exercis

@marblescorpion @_ahbibis_ Aand..vaguely referencing AAPI which consists of diverse ethnicities only explained what event the dessert was being sold for. It didn’t identify the specific cultural origin of the dessert itself.

@marblescorpion @_ahbibis_ they tie directly into the broader issue of acknowledgment and cultural credit. pointing out that he technically never said “I invented this” doesn’t actually address the underlying criticism people were making.
