Labor’s tax budget is a fiasco. And it is so typical of how they do everything. Make the announcement, try to work out how to make it work and when it blows up blame everyone accept themselves.
Housing Minister Clare O’Neil has fumbled a key detail of Labor’s contentious negative gearing clampdown, struggling to explain whether a granny flat will qualify for the tax concession under the overhaul.
The Coalition pushed O’Neil in QT on whether building a second dwelling on an existing title would mean that title was now considered a new build, and able to be negatively geared.
O’Neil responded: “A new dwelling is one that genuinely adds new to housing supply.”
Angus Taylor seized on the answer, declaring after question time: “Labor cannot answer basic questions about its own toxic taxes. The Housing Minister was asked a simple question in the parliament about what counts as a new build. She dodged it, because the government does not understand the real-world damage its taxes will do to housing supply, renters and first home buyers.”
