The King George V class were the most modern British battleships of the Second World War. They are perhaps best known for their actions against Bismarck in 1941 and Scharnhorst in 1943, as well as the sinking of Prince of Wales in December 1941. (1/x)

@JonA2i @larisamlbrown The Type 26 absolutely does not have the required AA capabilities for anything other than self, and very local, defence.

@larisamlbrown Since the RN MUST scale back its global ambitions, and since the new City Class has significant anti-air capabilities, maybe going all in on the T26 wouldn't be a bad plan?

@CdrEricson 4-inch guns intended to provide a defence against torpedo boats / destroyers. It was not expected that they would be used in a day-action at the same time the main armament would be in use. In 1914-15 they were moved to the superstructure.

@mpwarwick What are guns on top of the main turrets and their purpose? Not sure I’d like to be up there when the main armament shoots.

The battle cruiser HMS Indomitable. Ordered under the 1905-06 estimates as a new type of armoured cruiser, with increased speed and a uniform main battery of 8 x 12-inch guns, the three ships of the Invincible class have prompted endless debate ever since...

Sorry, but France have really dropped the ball with this name choice. “Free France” belongs in the same category as the “Inspiration class”. Pity.

France Libre.

@thinkdefence Do you ever think we'll have a defence programme that's about defence, rather than jobs?

Great briefing by Rear Admiral De Possesse (remotely) at today's French MoD press briefing. The slide gives a good indication of the participating units to the CSG since exercise Orion 26. RADM De Possesse is the @French_CSG commander. He confirmed - France's purely defensive posture - The CSG sailed 3600 NM in 6 days following the retasking order - Spanish AOR Cantabria was praised for its key role in resupplying the CSG - No interaction or communication with the 2 USN CSGs (including Ford) - Units of the French CSG will not participate in mission Aspides in the Red Sea Lastly he praised the French sailors under his command for their dedication, proffesionalism and calmness

Tom Antonov@Tom_Antonov

Rt @LEXPRESS 🇫🇷🇦🇪🇯🇴 France has temporarily increased its Rafale deployment in #Jordan and #UAE to 24 jet fighters (compared with the usual 10), and these jets have already intercepted dozens of Iranian drones. #France #Iran #uav

I just got a random ad for British Antarctic Survey jobs and most are £30,000–31,000k a year for South Georgia or Antarctica, which seems a bit low. Definitely low for the radio operator though (who also acts as a flight controller):

@lennylaw @Drachinifel @Jordan_W_Taylor I believe it was to minimise vibration. The USN did a lot of work on propeller configurations after the North Carolinas completed with unacceptably high vibration, that required remedial work before they could be declared operational.
