Step up in basis is one of the most powerful tax provisions and can wipe out a lot of taxes.
Say your dad bought $200k of stocks in a brokerage account that are now worth $2M.
He passes them down to you as inheritance. You sell them for $2M and pay $0 in tax.
Very powerful.
