@sabizak I know many families who fast as a form of paying respect to prophet's progeny. Historically it was started with Umayad's declaring it as a blessed day. In recent history it's been said that it has nothing to do with Karbala but Prophet pbuh recommended to fast on 9th and 10th

Bit confused why sunnis fasting on ashura is an issue. I know a close relative who does it and is by no means an anti-shia bigot, in fact part of her reasoning is respect for karbala. I know that’s not how shias respect or commemorate those events but how does fasting imply insult/indifference?
