Wow. The head of Serbia’s military intel pushes back on the narrative being spread by Orban accusing Ukraine of planting the explosives found by a gas pipeline that goes to Hungary. Calls it disinformation.
Csaba Tóth 🇸🇴@tothcsabatibor

Extraordinary statement by Serbian VOA head Lt. Colonel Đuro Jovanić accusing president Aleksandar Vučić and state leaders of "being sceptical" about their earlier reports on plans for a pipeline sabotage, and denying in strong words allegations of involvement to frame Ukraine.

In 2014, as the siege of Yarmouk led to such extreme starvation that Imams had to issue a fatwa allowing Palestinian refugees to eat cats and dogs, @intifada refused to report on it. After I badgered them , they got one of their hacks to publish a story exonerating the killers.

Rainy afternoon NBER dump. First, turns out much of what we remember as the golden era of American labor -- the 1950s and 60s -- was really just a consequence of Cold War military-related manufacturing employment and tight labor markets due to the draft. nber.org/papers/w35008

Sticking with the 1950s theme, sugar rationing in the U.K. provides a nice natural experiment to show that restricting infants' sugar intake reduced obesity later in life, particularly for those who are genetically predisposed: nber.org/papers/w35005

I wrote how the Ford government, which claims to be transparent, drags its feet replying to some sensitive FOI requests - in my case a November 2024 request for transportation ministry bike lane records. Seventeen months later, I have nothing ... thestar.com/news/gta/doug-…

@Michael56297223 @donnelly_b If you think we're building like crazy now then you must have thought the 70s and 90s were the decade of ruin and mass unaffordability (rather than how it was IRL, the cheapest times to live it's ever been in Toronto).

@Michael56297223 @donnelly_b We aren't building as much as the 90s, let alone the 70s. You are under some kind of misapprehension as to how much Toronto builds per capita. Our vacancy rate only just reached 3% after years at under 2%. That's very low! Homeowners also got very rich, property values way up.

Toronto’s stated policy goal is to have 6 storey apartments along its major streets. It’s a shame it doesn’t make economic sense to build them.

@EmergentLand @ChrisSpoke I think a lot of those people aren't going to join YIMBYism anyways. It seems like seeing "Liberals aren't going to win if communists and far right wingers are in their party" - sure, but commies aren't going to join the libs. Some of what you're saying seems tautological to me?

I don't agree with that. Yimbys are failing in part because they keep building coalitions with political factions that want to keep certain housing restrictions. YIMBYs are not going to succeed in a big tent with people who collectively want a ton of housing restrictions. - democratic politicians that want to keep local control - Architectural revivalists that want discretionary Arcitecture reviews and architectural control committees - new urbanists that want strict form based codes - environmentalists that want strict environmental reviews YIMBYs can't sit in a big tent with people that want a thick land use code full of discretionary reviews, design reviews, environmental reviews, form reviews, and local veto. They won't succeed at making housing easy to build.

I had other things I wanted to do today but someone had to do it: A paragraph-by-paragraph takedown of why basically everything in this op-ed is wrong. Kind of shocking how bad it is (starting with using "messy" to refer to hundreds of thousands of deaths)

@ChrisSpoke Isn't there quite a bit more to it though? Financing, taxation, and how we fund and design cities, etc? I can't say I'm a development expert, but that was my impression from what I've read.

@only_clickbait I don’t think they should be cast away. I love converts! I just think that yimbyism will be most effective if it remains squarely focused on deregulation.

A UCLA researcher found U.S. building codes lack cost-benefit analysis and accumulate rules without removing them. The result: mid-rise buildings cost 55% more per square foot than single-family homes — a gap other wealthy countries don't see. cayimby.org/blog/shining-a…

@Michael56297223 @donnelly_b It's very expensive to tear down a building. It should be obvious to any non-idiot it only happens b/c it's so hard to build elsewhere in Toronto due to NIMBYs like you. People like you are responsible for it by making it so difficult to build (and extending permitting times).

@Michael56297223 @donnelly_b Lol, so I guess my assumption was right and for some reason that made you a bit upset. Excited for when they put up a 6 story building right by your house, looking forward to seeing you at the development meeting!

@ChrisSpoke People are allowed to grow and change. But if they were cast away for not being ideologically correct enough (despite often having the right intentions), would that have been beneficial to the YIMBY movement? I feel like no... IZ is intuitive if you're not an expert or read up.

@only_clickbait There are many people who would consider themselves yimby today who were advocating for IZ 3-5 years ago.
