Yesterday in @NgororeroDistr RCCDN was pleased to receive visitors from @sciaf, @trocaire, and CJC implementing partners @Duhamic1 and @NUDOR_Rw. They were joined by Ngororero District officials, including the Director of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the JADF Officer, and the District Disaster Management Officer, as well as Muhanda Sector officials, including the Executive Secretary, Sector Agronomist, and Sector Forestry Officer. The joint team visited Cyome Center, where they observed how a once-abandoned site is being restored and beautified. At Cyome, the visitors participated in a tree-planting exercise and listened to transformation testimonies from members of a women’s group actively involved in the restoration efforts. The team then proceeded to Muhanda Sector, Bihandagara Cell, Nyamutoni Village, where they observed radical terraces, agroforestry practices, and heard additional testimonies from terrace owners highlighting the impact of these interventions. The visitors commended the implementing partners for the impactful work carried out during the CJC Program and expressed appreciation for the visible progress in environmental restoration, inclusivity, and community transformation.

What if restoring the land could also restore lives? In Rwanda, Charlotte from Karongi District is living proof. Through the RCCDN – TerraFund for AFR100 Restoration Project, she has gone from struggling to building a stable livelihood, investing in livestock, starting a small shop, and growing her confidence along the way. A rich and timely discussion at #PACJA Webinar 5 on the Road to COP31–32 The session unpacked what a Just Transition means for Africa in the face of persistent energy poverty, emphasizing the need to align climate action with development priorities. Conversations explored the political economy of energy transitions, including how geopolitics, global finance, and power dynamics continue to shape Africa’s options. Speakers highlighted the importance of a carefully sequenced transition that safeguards energy security and industrial growth, while also addressing the continent’s need for expanded energy access. The role of critical minerals, value addition, and regional cooperation in building resilient economies was also emphasized. Financing gaps, limited access to technology, and dependence on external capital remain major barriers, reinforcing the need for stronger domestic resource mobilization and African-led solutions.

At #AUF2 in Nairobi, the NGOs Forum on Sustainable Urban Development convened voices from across Africa and the Global South to reimagine the future of our cities. Representing PACJA, our Head of Policy, Advocacy, and Communications, Philip Kilonzo underscored a critical message: There is no sustainable urbanization without climate resilience and justice. As climate impacts intensify floods, heatwaves, and inequality, our cities are becoming the frontline of the crisis. He called for: Stronger #SouthSouth cooperation to co-create local solutions Inclusive, people-centered & climate-resilient urban planning Meaningful inclusion of CSOs in decision-making Accessible climate finance for vulnerable urban communities. From #AUF2 to #WUF13, the Global South must move beyond participation to agenda-setting and collective leadership. #ClimateJustice #SustainableCities #Africa #UrbanDevelopment

What must change for Africa’s climate action to truly protect lives, rights, and futures? From Friday Phiri (Health Cluster): “We don’t want to end at declaration… we need it embedded in real implementation.” He stressed that climate and health must move beyond recognition to actionable priorities, including financing, adaptation support, and pushing for a stand-alone climate & health agenda in global processes. From Wycliffe Amakobe (Human Rights Cluster): “If rights are not explicitly embedded, justice risks becoming rhetorical.” He warned that without clear accountability and redress mechanisms, communities could face harm from climate projects, highlighting the need to anchor human rights in implementation, not just language. From Malama Mwlila (Children’s Cluster): “It would be a grave injustice if we have this conversation without children.” He emphasized that children who make up a large share of Africa’s population, must be included in decision-making, with focus on resilience, education, and safeguarding their future. The message is clear: climate action must be people-centered, rights-based, and future-focused. #ClimateJustice #AddisAbabaDeclaration #AfricaClimateSummit2 #RoadtoCOP31

What will it take to make climate action truly inclusive and impactful in Africa? From Juliet Luo (Women & Gender Cluster ACS2): “We want to see that gender is strengthened within the outcomes and decisions.” She stressed that progress would depend on strong gender integration, clear accountability, and adequate financing, noting that without resources and measurable indicators, even strong frameworks risk falling short in implementation. From Jodahi Petros @JodahiP (Youth Representative, Africa Youth Climate Assembly): “The Africa Climate Summit created momentum for young people to engage across sectors.” He highlighted how youth are increasingly shaping the climate agenda, but emphasized the need to sustain that momentum through deeper inclusion, innovation, and recognition of youth priorities in implementation Real impact will depend on who is included and how effectively they are empowered to act. #ClimateJustice #AddisAbabaDeclaration #AfricaClimateSummit2 #RoadtoCOP31
