Signal + disappearing messages with really sensitive stuff. iMessage or WhatsApp 1:1 chats (not group chats!) for most other stuff. These are E2E encrypted meaning neither Signal, WhatsApp, or Apple know contents. Everywhere else assume government or company can “listen in”

@GergelyOrosz What are you using instead of Telegram?

Ok, I failed to realize Telegram: 1. Uses basically *no ecryption* for the vast majority of messages (they can read and re-read any non-secret chat messages and all group messages) 2. Do no content moderation! You cannot do this & get away with it. Either encrypt or moderate!

@GergelyOrosz You can also go to your repo on GitHub, then “Settings”, then under “Features”, disable Issues, PRs, Discussions etc. But I guess the Archive option is great too, as it signals intent quite clearly.

This is the type of frustration I've experienced, though smaller scale. An unarchived project allows people to open issues for questions, to complain, open PRs with the expectation of merging etc. For some subset of open source: none of this is useful. x.com/jit_compile/st…
Justin Boylan-Toomey@jit_compile

@GergelyOrosz Interesting, this has also been my experience, I open sourced a tool just to share, with no time to maintain it. However a major bank made it a key part of their infra, and started asking for features/complaining about the lack of support, via my GitHub, linkedin, email, etc...

The few times I released a project as open source, my intent was: "Here's the code for what I built. Use it as you want (if you want). Hope it's helpful. Don't ask my for anything." But open source tools like GitHub aren't set up for this kind of "drop and forget" use cases.

So I got this nice award (PAMI Distinguished Researcher). PAMI is the name of a journal and the technical committee that helps run our field. But for me it’s more. It’s a home that’s supported and nurtured my career. A scientist doesn’t make a career on their own. 1/3

@inaciog Visual Studio and especially its debugger are still unbeaten for C++. But I agree VS Code is among Microsoft’s best. Also, I didn’t see anyone mention Flight Simulator yet! It’s one of their oldest product series, even predating Windows.

VS Code is probably the best software ever produced by Microsoft.

Recruiting a ML/Vision research engineer for a KTP project with @PhaseFocus1. The project is about tracking the dynamic behaviour of individual live cells with machine learning - a cool and impactful project at the intersection of research and industry.
Phasefocus@PhaseFocus1

Phasefocus are looking for a new #KTP Associate in the field of #AI/Computer Vision in partnership with the @UniOfYork. Closing date for applications is early May... jobs.york.ac.uk/vacancy/ai-com… #hiring #ML #Livecyte

@VisionBernie I can't believe this either... 15 years of using the presenter view - this feature is either way too well hidden, or perhaps it's fairly new... Thank you, this will come in handy!

Two years into the pandemic, two years using zoom I learned that I can use power point in presenter view with a single screen! Meaning I can share the presentation via zoom in a window and actually have the presenter view for myself - the feature is well hidden - Alt + F5

@claucece Hi :) Check out @gregcons’s YouTube videos too. “Stop teaching C” is a good start. I’d also recommend getting familiar with CMake as build system. @crascit’s book is fantastic and gets regular updates. And use a package manager (e.g. vcpkg), otherwise dependencies are hell!

Ok, the time has come. I'm going to learn C++. Any resources to recommend (I'm familiar with C, Golang and Rust)?

Very interesting paper by my friend & colleague Adam! NeMo, Neural mesh models - Learning a generative model of neural feature activations at each vertex on a dense 3D mesh. Cool concept and increased robustness to occlusions in 3D object pose estimation.
Adam Kortylewski 🚨 Hiring PhD students@AdamKortylewski

Our paper on Neural Mesh Models was accepted at #ICLR! The model does analysis-by-synthesis on the level of neural features (instead of pixels) to perform 3D pose estimation robustly under occlusion and for previously unseen views of an object. openreview.net/forum?id=pmj13…
