A very recent large systematic review and updated meta-analysis on statin use and dementia risk, published on January 16, 2025, in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: Translational Research & Clinical Interventions,
Is the most comprehensive one to date, pooling data from 55 observational studies involving over 7 million patients.
It concluded that statin use was associated with a significant reduction in dementia risk (hazard ratio 0.86, meaning about a 14% lower risk overall compared to non-users), as well as reductions in Alzheimer’s disease (HR 0.82) and vascular dementia risks. The protective effects were even stronger in certain subgroups, like those on statins for more than 3 years (up to a 63% reduction in some analyses), people with type 2 diabetes, and certain populations (e.g., stronger in Asia). Specific statins like rosuvastatin showed particularly pronounced benefits.”
