Alow me to simplify why a national popular vote for the President is a bad idea and why the Electoral College is a feature, not a bug.
The Electoral College actively prevents us from being a true democracy because true democracies are really bad ideas and allow a low information electorate to simple take what it wants from anyone else. Property rights cease to exist in a true democracy. So do civil rights, minority rights, or any other rights that 50.1% of the people who show up to vote don't want you to have anymore.
The country would be run by New York, LA, Chicago, and Dallas. No one's opinions outside of those cities would matter.
By having the electoral system it forces Presidential candidates to cater to all 50 states, not just the most populated cities. This ensures that a farmer's rights in Bismark, North Dakota are as important as a homeless man's in New York City, thus making sure the entire nation is represented by the Executive Branch equally.
Remember in The Hunger Games where the people of the outlying cities existed only to feed and entertain the residents of the central city under threat of death?
That is what not having an electoral college would cause in the United States.
Additionally, removing it would require a Constitutional Amendment. And because it would require a Constitutional Amendment anything that attempts to change the process without an Amendment is an end run around the Constitution and is invalid on its face per Marbury v Madison.

I'm not quite sure how VA got played. Spanberger's record as a radical was clear. She would not even condemn someone wishing for the death of not only her Republican opponents but their children too. A majority of VA voters chose her anyway. I feel for those who didn't. But VA is about to suffer for those foolish choices.

JUST IN: Governor Abigail Spanberger officially signs a bill handing over Virginia’s 13 electoral votes to whoever wins the most votes across the whole country… even if Virginians vote the other way. Insane. They rushed it through with mostly Democrat votes. The plan has 222 votes. It needs 270 to actually start working. Once it does, your vote in Virginia doesn’t matter anymore. The Founders made the Electoral College so a few big cities don’t boss the whole country. This is a sneaky Democrat power grab to cheat that. “Every vote counts the same”? Lies. Virginians are pissed off, and they should be. They got played.
