TOMORROW! “I spent 30 years preparing to be a director… and by the time I was ready, I wondered if I’d missed my chance.” Jay Holben has worked every job on set — actor, gaffer, cinematographer, writer — all to become a better director and educator. In tomorrow’s episode, he opens up about the setbacks that nearly broke him, the lessons no one teaches you, and why learning how to lead, communicate, and keep going might be more important than talent. This one is raw, honest, and packed with wisdom for any filmmaker who’s ever felt behind, burned out, or like they’re still not “there yet.” Full Episode drops tomorrow.

I was listening to Adam Grant talk about potential. He said something along the lines of: “We don’t regret what we try and fail. We regret what we never attempt.” One of my fears in life is "what if I don't live up to my potential?" Our potential isn’t just a gift, it’s a responsibility. What happens when we leave our potential unused? What do we miss out on becoming? I think that fear is there to help me when I feel stuck waiting, second-guessing, or stuck in overthinking.

I’ve been writing a lot more lately. It’s a new practice for me, and honestly, I don’t know what I’m doing. But it’s something I want to get better at. I’ve been tracking thoughts and ideas that come up as I read, listen, or work on things for @larkhaus, and I want to share more of them. This is one of those posts. Just a few reflections inspired by what I’ve been learning and thinking about lately. I hope something in here resonates with you. If it does, let me know. I’d love to keep going.

I sat down with the guy who studies billionaires and hung out with Charlie Munger. I've done 200 episodes of the startup ideas podcast and this one with David Senra was probably the most mind-bending one. if you're a founder, read my notes or listen to the pod in next tweet

My favorite part of Awards season is seeing all of the “underdogs” get nominated. The people who’ve been working on a dream for many years and never gave up. How many times did they almost quit? How many people told them it was better to move on? It takes so much resilience to hear no a thousand times. To keep going, and believe in a dream when no one else can see it. Those are the best stories.

A DP friend who shoots primarily on film shared that as budgets get smaller, he doesn't get to be a part of post/color. So shooting on film allows him to have more control over the final look as he's shooting. I've also heard the "it looks better" take a lot, which I don't think is as valid.

why do you think filmmakers are re-introducing film into the process? not the final image - who cares. but why shoot on FILM? does the friction contribute somehow? nostalgia? a placebo effect? genuinely asking. devalued process = devalued product?
